Just wondering if any one has any experience with the sarcoid treatment. Vet is talking about this special cream (sorry dont know name!) Meant to be really aggressive. Apparently they can need up to 6 weeks off and box rest whilst its applied. I think he said they come out to apply it every other day or something. Just wondering if any one has had it done on their horse and whether it worked and what time off they needed?

Thanks in advance

Probably Liverpool cream. Nasty stuff apparently. Dose sarcoid need to be treated. My horse developed vascular one a year ago under her belly. Was size of 50p but not got any worse. Vet suggested keep eye on it as sometimes they are not an issue but if it started to be a problem they said would laser it off ... something to think about.

Unfortunately needs to be treated as he is only young so chance of spreading are quite high. There are about 4 between his back legs so therefore when he works and sweats they get irritated which apparently can cause them to multiply. Also he is going to be for sale eventually which will reduce his resale price drastically. I know there is a small chance of making them worse. But very rare. Just thought it would be worth a try

Hubby's Tb had on at the top of his forearm (it was biopsied so was deffo a sarcoid) It was treated with Liverpool cream, he had no time off work, or box rest. (In fact he continued to compete at dressage) The vet came out to apply the cream on 4 occasions and after 8 weeks it just fell off, leaving a bit of ahole, but it healed up quickly.

Thanks thats good to know! My horses are only pea sized so hopefully wont need as much time off as vet first said. He did say he hoped to cut the time off down. Hopefully hes just giving worst case scenario! Just getting going after a holiday dont want any more time off! lol

My horse had a sarcoid on his face successfully treated with Liverpool cream and no box rest, though the cheek strap on his bridle would have rubbed the sarcoid area so he couldn't be ridden for a couple of weeks. Liverpool cream needs to be applied by a vet and usually needs 3 or 4 separate applications with a few days in between each, so be prepared for callout charges! There's been zillions of posts on sarcoids over the years so a search might prove helpful.

A mare of mine had one on her upper inner thigh.
It got very big very quickly. It was almost as big as my thumb and the same shape.
Photos were sent to Proff Knotty (not sure how to spell his name correctly, sorry)
He advised a rubber ring on the base of it in conjunction with application of Liverpool cream.
She was kept out, not box rest needed.
We did cover her udder with Vaseline though as a precaution to stop it getting burned by the cream.
She stood fine for it to be applied, although some dont!! And find it very painful.
It took a lot longer to drop off than had been expected though. But left a clean wound which has healed up very well.

She hasnt held in foal since though, and that was 3 years ago.
I dont know if its connected of not ??

mine had the Liverpool cream on his sheath and it was very successful.

it caused a bit of a mess at the time but has come off with no mark or scar and didn't seem too painful for him even though it was in a very sensitiver place!

he also had his banded which i think really helped.

recommend a lot of vaseline to plaster the surrounding area with as a barrier (i also plastered my boy's inner thigh for when he lay down etc).

Yes its Liverpool cream, my boy had 2 seperate treatments. A bit sore but no time off. The worst case scenario was that he might get so sore that he would need sedating, but he was only on bute for about 3 days. I was never told he would need box rest etc. Applied 4x over a 2(ish) week period. It might be nasty stuff but it work excellantly for me. I gave him Global Herbs Sarc-X supplement at the time - its acts as a bit of a detox, so helps remove the nasty stuff from the liver. Ask all the questions you need to from your vet but dont be afraid of this stuff. Theres no guarentees with sarcoids and no guarentee it will work (like any other treatment)but my vet told me that if they are treated with an alternative first, the cream doesnt act as well after.

I'd be inclined to get a second opinion as i havn't heard that many horses needing box rest after it. But thats just me my knowlege of it so someone else can say different.

I don't understand about the boxrest. Pickle had Liverpool Cream treatment twice & didn't have box rest at all - in fact she was out 24/7. Most of Pickles traetment healed in a few weeks, but 1 on her back - under the saddle area never properly healed.

My old lad was treated with Liverpool cream for a really nasty ulcerated one on his forearm. Vet came on 6 occasions to apply cream and he lived out the entire time. Plastered the area in vaseline to protect surrounding skin & keep flies off but didnt need to be box rested at all. He stayed in for a few hours afterwards just until the cream sunk in (it was summer & a fair few flies around) but went out as usual after that. He was in work the entire time too and didnt seem to mind it being applied at all. He was on bute whilst it was being treated, as much to help the swelling in the area though i think. It looked much worse before it started to get better but it did eventually go black & start to shrink. It took about 3 months to drop off completely and it did leave i bit of a hole to begin with but didnt take long to heal properly and hardly left a scar :) Very glad we treated it.
