Sarcoids..???

Of course get the vet to check them. I know what Im about to say will horrify many in the anti-turmeric brigade but going purely from personal experience - Ive had 2 horses with a sarcoid each that got irritated by flies (so looked a bit like these). Vets suggested liverpool cream. I decided to try 2 weeks of putting turmeric mixed with sudocrem on them first. You know what, both those sarcoids healed up very quickly and shrunk to the point I can only just feel one still on one horse and on the other its totally flat.

I had Liverpool cream on one that looked exactly like the OP’s pictures. Successful and no further issues. However, the verrucous type that he had in his axilla, I did the sudocrem/turmeric trick and the vet couldn’t understand where it had gone!

Update:
Vet has been today and yes, they are both sarcoids. He will be going for laser surgery in approx 3 weeks to remove them

Interesting. Expensive!

The evidence about horses passing them to each other is real, but the important thing is that most healthy horses with good immune systems will be able to fight them and not actually develop sarcoids. My old mare developed one after my gelding had them, but hers went as quickly as it came.

Is it more expensive than LC with repeat vet visits? I've no idea of the cost of these treatments. If you know SLH, can you tell us?
.

Would just like to say that Liverpool Cream didn't even come up as an option..??
Anyway, as the vet ran through the options my friend almost had a nosebleed when he mentioned laser surgery ?? We assumed it would be super costly but it's only £310, that's at the vets with standing sedation. I have to say that was less than half of what we were expecting him to say ???
Due to the one ulcerating and attracting flies it seems to be the best all round option.
So the farrier is out in 2 weeks to trim and do his feet again as he is being done every 4 weeks due to the white line disease. Do far there is a great improvement although he is still a bit footy on the front. Once that trime is done with he will have the laser surgery and then the physio. Honestly, this guy has no idea how lucky he is to have found my friend..!!!!

The vet let me apply the cream, probably not the right thing, but saved me a fortune.

I”m surprised at the vet doing laser surgery during this hot midgey weather. For mine, the vet did it ASAP so we didn’t have the hot fly weather.

Some vets recommend applying acyclovir to the edge of the wound as it heals to try to suppress regrowth. If her vet doesn't prescribe it, she can multi- buy little tubes of it on ebay or pay a mint for Zovirax in Boots.

Not sure if others have already recommended as I’ve only scanned through the post. But try and keep flies away, vet recommended yellow summer fly cream. I’ve been using Hilton herbs equimmune on mine, took a few months but they sort of protruded out and then came off and then healed 709A67B0-A25F-4C77-BDDA-5A4FF751132F.jpeg

Sorry if they’ve not come up right but one is the day it came off, as you can see it’s left a hole and the other is a week after when it had healed.
As I said took a few months to get to this stage but I didn’t like the thought of burning creams etc so decided it couldnt do any harm to try herbs ☺️

That is a very reasonable price for sarcoid removal. My mare had two treated with LC in 2003 and that was more expensive than that laser removal price then.

I’ve had Liverpool cream and laser done for mine.
The Liverpool cream, had to have 2 rounds, each round about £900 (thankfully that one under insurance), with all the vet visits.
Laser done 4 months ago was £650 I think, but he had to stay in overnight as my vets don’t like to send straight home as the site tends to bleed more than owners anticipate/like to see.

My boy has many - I mix 50/50 salt and flour and add some water to a thick paste and put a layer on the sarcoid at either end of the day. Keeps the flies off lovely and forms a crust over the top when it dries, not painful and completely natural. I find that fly sprays can sting and don't last a full day.
I have also has a couple of his fall off having used this, whether there is a correlation or this is just good luck I do not know.

I'm late to the party on this, I found this thread because i was googling "Flour and salt for sarcoids".

Would you still recommend this? I've come across the "Sarcoid Cure" facebook page and considering the ingredients cost pennies, am keen to give it a go. The old boy has what i thought were weird skin tags in a cluster, but with his recent illnesses this has become full blow sarcoids which appear to be growing rapidly.

Now if he's grey, that would increase the chances that it's a melanoma: in the early days of both, it's easy to confuse them. If they're growing rapidly, then that makes melanoma even more of a possibility: so vet is No. 1 - and the trust his diagnosis and treatment.

Another thing to add to the mix - If they emerge during a period of ill health or compromised immunity, I have read they can spontaneously resolve, especially in young horses, and then never return. I assume he is young? If they haven't had them before age 7, I believe they are unlikely to develop them ever. He might, once he is back to full speed with his immune system, overcome them himself. You either leave well alone and observe, stepping in when things need it, or act ASAP. Either course of action should involve a vet.

I do hope he comes good.

My horse has had 2 sarcoids come up after illness I put him on pro balance and he had a few months on restore and they went away on there own.

@SatansLittleHelper - how is the wee fellow?

He's currently out on loan and doing amazingly, thank you for asking ?? So far, absolutely no sign of the sarcoids returning but it's been less than a year so who knows.
For anyone considering laser treatment I highly recommend it. Over and done with in a day, recovery time was minimal and no constant messing about with creams etc. If I ever had a horse again with them the laser would be my first port of call. I can't comment on any scarring in the area as it's his inner thighs and sheath...he's tickly there plus he's the hairless ball of fluff ever lol.

My friend's "cheap" cob is turning out to have several issues bless him. He has WLD which is being treated and he's slowly but surely coming right. Farrier is pleased with his progress snd cob looks infinitely more comfortable. He seems to have mild sweet itch which is being dealt with but now has developed these small lesions. I don't remember seeing them before but the one on the inside of his thigh was bleeding, then I noticed something on the back end of his sheath (same side).
They look suspiciously like sarcoids to me..?? View attachment 53102View attachment 53103
Sarcoids can appear anytime, specially when first purchased, due to stress, and new environment.

My second mare was vetted and was sarcoid free - 3 weeks later they started appearing - banded off and vanished.
My ID I got in 2015 - was free sarcoids when vetted. After a month she had one inside leg, then face- boobies- girth area etc. again vet treated and I bought sarcex. Now all gone though some scars remain, so glad you contacted your vet.
