I know this should strictly speaking be in Vets but i figured id get a better response in here.
H, my little spotty lad looks like hes got a couple of sarcoids on his sheath.
I was just wondering how expensive treatment is for this? Also what the best treatment is, ive heard liverpool cream is but i also hear its very painful for them :(
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
x

liverpool cream is rather harsh stuff, it burns the sarcoid off but the surrounding skin also so it might not be suitable for a sheath, your vet will give you the best treatment for them depending on the grade of them.

Best to get your vet to look at it.

My older mare is waiting for liverpool cream at the moment, and has been for some weeks. There is a waiting time to get the cream, so if you are going to use it, then you want to get it reported quickly.

could be warts?

we were never sure on our horses sheath, I used marmite then NAF off which has garlic and tea tree, they all fell off and didnt return i didnt want to go down the liverpool route as they werent rubbing, just by chance tried this odd remedies and they worked

Could very well be sarcoids, however a friend thought similar on her horse, she left them for a month to see, in that time they grew very quickly more internally than externally and turned out to be tumours, and apparently on the sheath are so aggressive and invasive grew very fast very very quickly. By the time the vet came sadly she had left it too long and they were untreatable, he was PTS 3 months after her initially spotting them.

Please get your vet to have a look sooner than later, as if caught earlier they can be dealt with apparently a couple of weeks can make a big difference.

Hope yours are nothing sinister and treatments goes well.

Just be aware that my vets have had two horses at their hospital recently who have had to have their penis removed due to sarcoids, so if it's in that area, it really is best to act swiftly.

my lad had squamous cell carcenoma on his penis, he had cryogenic surgical freezing done on them to take them away. This can be done if you have caught it quickly enough so get teh vet out sharpish jsut in case.

i dont think they use liverpool cream on the actual penis due to the swelling it causes which means they cant really go to the toilet.
courses of liverpool treatment for my boy have come to about £300 a go.... your vet will proberly take pics and send them to the chappie at liverpool uni.

Sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you, :o but there is quite a wait for liverpool cream (that I personally am getting a little frustrated about at the mo) and I just wanted to make you aware. Hope it all goes well with your boy. Keep us posted. xx

I've used Liverpool Cream on sheath sarcoids, and it caused enough swelling to cause problems. More recently, one of my colts developed a couple of sarcoids on his sheath and his scrotum and Prof.K. recommended Fluorourcil - branded Efudix 5%. It's prescription only but you can apply it yourself (twice daily for a week, then once daily for a week in my boy's case.) It does have a local reaction but not anywhere near as severe as LC for sensitive tissues.

I would get your vet to send photos to Prof. K. and he will advise the best and safest treatment.

Please get your vet to check asap.

I have just had to have my daughters pony PTS because he had Squamous cell carcinoma on his willy which is a very aggressive, fast growing form of cancer that had spread to the lymph nodes in his groin.

The growths on his willy looked very much like sarcoids.

Sarcoids on sheaths are quite common

I would have the vet come look at them as there are many treatment options (liverpool cream, putting a lambing band round them if they are nodular, or if they are nicely capsulated you can just cut them out!) If they are easy to see and sort sarcoids the vets will generally just say ok we will do X

If its less clear they ften photo and send to D. Knottenbelt who is like sarcoid GOD :) yes it takes time to get the cream coz he makes it for your particular case (so strength etc is different in each pot!) and if he doesnt feel it would be suitable for your horse to use the cream, he will recommend another treatment which he feels would be more suitable.

SCC are horrid tumours but htey effect the penis rahter than the sheath, generally in older geldings and (i think im right?!) your lad is only a baby?? in which case this would not be a major concern right now....

I could just be a wart at the end of the day and its just like hmm silly wart :)

But id get the vet out to check

DON'T put anything on it yet as you can really aggrevate sarcoids and make them become more malignant than if you leave them alone until treatment time.

My lad was 12 so not 'old'

It's just not worth taking a chance and assuming it's a sarcoid when it may not be.....

Title says 'sarcoidy thing on willy' is it willy (penis) or sheath

sorry did not mean to cause offense, by old I was meaning an adult so not a yearling-3yo sort of age....... but neoplasias are one of those things that we make guidelines to be able to diagnose them, and then they go nah I wanna go like X instead of Y!!!

I thought the OP said sheath even tho the title said willy? Il double check :) ........ yup, it says sheath in the post
