Sardines - how do you feed them?

Hi

I've read a lot of posts lately that talk about feeding sardines to dogs - its not something i had really thought of until reading it in AAD. I previously had my JRT on the DUCK diet, but because it was a faff to buy and i only have a very small freezer i then introduced a dry diet instead - Arden Grange (just moved to the 'mini' version they've brought out) - but i was wondering what the key advantages/benefits of feeding the sardines (assuming its the same as for humans - oily fish omega 3 and all that), and how you feed them. Now personnally i cant stand eating fish myself, have never liked it, and hate the smell & handling it too - so how 'hands on' will i have to be to feed them, and for a very small 1 year old JRT how many/much sould i feed?

Thanks!!

Here is what i do.

Open tin

Tip into bowl

Call dogs

:D

They just get a can each once or twice a week. I would do it instead of a meal for your boy.

Echo Katie Lou - although I add it to his evening ration of Kibble, which is also Arden Grange :)

My Dad tends to mash them up and mix them in with the kibble for his dogs but that's because he has two and they eat out of the same bowl - if he didn't mix them up, the greedy one would snaffle them all and the woosey one wouldn't get any!

I'm just about to give my dogs their dinner of sardinnes. I feed it about once a week, the other days they get raw minced meat (chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, tripe). I feed the sardinnes in oil, I just open the tin and tip them in their bowls, I have Border Collies and feed them 2 little tins with 2 or 3 sardinnes in each. And yes it's high in Omega 3 and supposed to be good for brain function.

Same as everyone else, but I also use them as Kong stuffing.

The method is: open tin, spray self with fishy oil.
Use fork to prise one out, stuff small end of fish into Kong and mash down with fork. Give to dog rapidly due to fish drip potential.
Dog accepts and runs off to wipe fish bits on anything clean
Wipe self, work surface, turn round to see I had not mashed it down far enough, and dog has finished and wants another one

Open back door, chuck out fish, chuck out dog (wash ears on re-entry- spaniel owners add on) :D

Ha Ha mine is similar only after having chucked fish, stand waiting for several minutes whilst two cattle dogs stare back at me "aw no not bl**dy fish again dunno about you mate but i aint eatin that! After a few minutes one will inevitably given in, after all even an Aussie will drink warm beer if he's thirsty enough!!!

When I were but a nipper (imagine this tale told in sepia!) our spaniel x lab pup (who was the the most loving, thickest creature on the planet) took himself behind the bar and got himself pissed on the pints my da had pulled off a couple of hours earlier (foolish father had left them under the bar, rather than ditched down the sink. I cannot imagine why. He would certainly never drop them back into the kegs of bitter he was flogging! ;)).

Poor puppy spent 24 hours on his back, with his legs stuck in the air. Not including the time he spent leaning on my mums legs begging the world to restore order in terms of simple balance :D

Maybe he secretly fancied himself an Australian :D

And yes, I'm pretty sure what was left of those pints found it's way back into the kegs anyway. Don't get me started on the very posh rib of beef the very same pup paraded around the pup with...

...Didn't put a soul off their beef baguettes :p:D

But on the topics of sardines. I utterly loathe fish type things, but Loki would like it I'm sure. Would I be OK to swap his breakfast for a small tin once a week? He's generally on Arden Grange, just moved onto Large Breed adult food. He only has 1/3 a cup in the mornings (more a token breakfast really), should I leave the likes of sardines for a day when I'm home in the hours after for toilet breaks? (they sound oily, lol :p) I'm home most of the time, but his feed routine atm is based on the occasional days I leave him after the morning walk for 3 hours. So as to avoid any confusions for him :)

I'm sure he'd appreciate a break from biscuits either way :D

LOL - poor dog bet there was a bit of a hangover!!! It reminded me I had a mug once with a elephant on it, it was drinking from a glass marked beer from its trunk, underneath the back end was a smaller trunk shall we say filling a glass marked lager!!!

I don't see why you can't replace breakfast with them, they are quite a power food for dogs, you could try it out when you are around just in case! I usually use the ones in tomato sauce and have taken to mixing raw eggs and a bit of veg to encourage the little darlings to partake in their fish supper!!!

Alternatively, Put shopping on the floor, go into the kitchen to put kettle on, come back through to find English bull terrier with that content 'full up' feeling after eating a 2kilo bag a frozen sardines :D always the opportunist.

My springer has them every morning to help with itchy skin, I've recently changed to feeding the ones in tomatos after the thread I started, didn't think of getting the actual fish, might look into that although a bit smeely to keep them, my mother already moans at the smell and if I give her a fish4dogs treat while she is in the room god help !

Whole and fresh, although Bear has his cut up as he tends to swallow them down in one:eek:

Tinned are great, the ones in tomato, although I think that the solanine in the tomato exacerbates arthritis (Brig has a tiny touch in one knuckle) but the lycopene is fantastic for the heart. Can't ruddy win. Either way, they get tins and whole (Brig won't eat whole fresh, weirdo!)

The oil is fab for joint care (you can get salmon oil from vet suppliers but the tinned stuff like sardines etc is just as effective, apparently)

(A friend told me kongs look like butt plugs-I have NO idea what they look like so can only imagine! I plug them with some wet food-Wainwrights or Nature Diet is fab-can cut a bit off and stuff it in-ideal!)

Dogs love theirs in tomato sauce. Cat prefers the sauce rinsed off.

Once made a trifle with whiskey as had run out of sherry. Put custard on and left it outside to cool before adding the cream.
Yep, result - one wobbly dog. Snored a bit too, but had a smile on his face.

My Grey has them in Tomato Sauce.

he has a mug of dry food every night (Autarkey) and then two thirds of a tin of sardines mashed in with it.
It is good for his coat as Greys can have very dry skin.
And it makes his otherwise boring looking dry food nicer.

He loves them too.

I did feed it it oil but that was too much oil for him and made his bowels loose. There is enough oil in the fish to do the job. :D

Tinned in marto sauce with raw mince once a week. Or a couple of fresh ones (trayfull for £1.49 from Morrisons) chucked in with whatever else they're having.

Most of the answers on here have made me lol but can't be arsed to quote them all :D
