Can anyone recommend a Sat Nav that has a "lorry" setting - my old Garmin did, it calculated routes and times accordingly for a 7.5+ - but newer model doesn't.

Can anyone recommend a good budget Sat Nav that won't send me through someones back garden?!
Not worried about traffic alerts etc - just a reassuring routefinder when driving on my own - I'm very obsessive about looking up routes on google maps, even down to using google earth so that I've already "seen" the areas I don't know etc - but don't currently trust the Garmin I have that is known for sending me on bizarre routes in the car, I haven't yet trusted it to navigate the horsebox!

Im also needing one of these so will be interested in any replies :). My tom-tom doesn't have a lorry setting :( and a satnav is a very important bit of kit for me, theres one in each car and one on my phone for when Im on my motorbike...me...easily lost....of course not! :p :D. Unfortunately my homing instinctive when out riding on new bridleways isn't echoed whilst driving!

Tom Tom make a Tom Tom Truck. If you search it on Amazon you can either buy the whole unit or just the memory card

ive just bought panoramic (huge) navman with lorry setting. The sat nav is no where near as nice as my car TomTom but it does the job, unfortunately the arses in Halfords didnt tell me the lorry mode was only free for 1 month, after that its £75! Having siad that its been a life saver so ill end up paying!

Tomtom too expensive for the truck model

However there's this one for just over £120

That's the one that I have though mine was a recondtioned one from ebay from the manufacturer.

You can put in weight length width and height (though I had to guess for height) and then you have 2 options, main roads which tries to keep you on bigger roads where possible or direct route which will take you down roads but will not send you over any unsuitable bridges.

Got my trusty truckers atlas, pity the moron that got stuck in the side of a grade one listed building and lost his load of olive oil Had a prat nav !!! sorry peeps but they are often and mostly used by ........ !!! :D

Got my trusty truckers atlas

This ^^

I always research any unknown routes on my truckers map and Google earth and do not rely entirely on sat nav. The truckers map shows low bridges and other restrictions. It can be purchased around the £20 mark at WH Smith (or similar) and truckstops.

I have a Tomtom XL which has a bigger screen. You can select certain options to avoid low bridges/weight restrictions etc.

A lot of the replies here seem to be from people selling Satnavs's!

I have a large iveco and had some real problems around events in Bucks and Berkshire.

Car satnav
For those interested I started with an ordinary car TomTom which found the places really well, but of course gave me narrow lanes et al.

Pronav truck satnav
After one bad morning of reversing so many times, I bought a pronav which claimed to be a truck satnav. It was cheap, however it didn't even find postcodes as well as the car TomTom ! It did avoid large and obvious low bridges on A roads - but seemed to do not very much when faced with my main problem of narrow lanes into and out of events at farms or other rural spots.

Upgraded TomTom
I then tried an upgrade for the TomTom called Procab (seems not to be related to pronav thy just both have pro in the name)

http://www.hgvsolutions.com

This solution had bridges, widths, weights ( not so much an issue for me) and most importantly narrow lanes - finally !

It is a cheap download and I added it onto the faithful old TomTom. Well it did help me, it saved looking at maps and does warn you in English if you are going to go down a road with a narrow track, bridge etc. It was a big help and kept me away from lots of nasty places. what I really wanted though was the postcodes of the TomTom, the help from Procab and something that would do the per planning for me.

Another new TomTom !
The hgvsolutions people had an advert for a satnav from tomtom which they said was specially for a horse box ! As i had found tomtoms very helpful I decided to look into it.

This is essentially a truck satnav, but this company set it up for you to work for a horsebox. They preload all the event locations and telephone numbers onto it, which lets me call ahead when I am on the way.

It's also all setup, updated, traffic etc - as I had Procab already they also setup narrow roads as well which seems to be hard to find. Most truck models I looked into have width limits, but there's a lot of lanes and tracks which don't have the unsuited for hgv signs on them - but none of us want to drive down them !

Well after now trying three different Satnavs and two products - I do seem to have a good setup. It's the old saying "you get what you pay for".

There doesn't seem to be any shortcuts around - and the various solutions vary hugely. After all this I must say my tips would be that you should definitely look at the TomTom 5150 or 7150 truck rtg Procab models - the people I ended up using ( see above ) did a good job, I guess however lots of places sell something like them.

For me the extras they add were essential ( i had already used them so knew i needed hem) - having the special added narrow roads was a big plus I found useful and the fact someone set it all up for me with the events already Pre loaded etc.

I think you could probably do that yourself if you we're good with computers ( I'm not that good) and I really just wanted something that I could get which was hassle free, as i had tried by then lots different !

So that's my saga and I hope it helps others looking. I have tried putting the relevant links above for those interested but don't know if they work. If not I found them using horsebox satnav in google.
