Satchmo - spooking or resisting?

I know this has probably already been discussed at length on today's Olympic post but I don't have time to read through it all! The commentators kept saying the other night that he spooked, but the fact that he did it again today, and in the same movement, made me think it was more a resistance. What's the view on here?
PS what happened to the Russian pink horse, I didn't see it in the results list tonight?

I didnt see today's test but I felt that in the previous test, Isabell did dig her spurs in perhaps a little too hard and he took exception to it.

He wasn't doing the move correctly, IW was using her spurs, Satchmo objected and resisted. He was all fingers and thumbs, couldn't do the move and threw his dummy out.

He was perhaps a little slow moving into the piaffe but you may argue that was for any number of reasons and maybe her aid was too strong for the there and then. I'm not underestimating the pressure of such an event and think she actually rode a darned good test

I agree. It looked six of one half a dozen of the other (if that term can be used for horse and rider).

IW maybe had in her mind what Satchmo had done previously and was possibly a little too enthusiatic with the spurs to prevent it again. But because Satchmo was getting himself in a tizzle he reacted by throwing a bronco fit.

IW did brilliantly getting him back and the horse equally so in allowing himself to be brought back.

I was very confused when his display in the special was referred to as a "spook"... I saw no spook, just resistance. Same again today in the kur, that certainly wasn't a spook! You could almost see it coming today when he stopped dead and then carried on just seconds before he went backwards.

Certainly looked very much like a resistence to me and it didn't seem to be that heavily penalised today or yesterday. I thought Anky was suberb so was Hieke Kemmer, they would have been my 1st and 2nd.

i thought it was resistance, either to the spur or to the memory of being trained with a trainer on the floor with a whip behind him, i thought!

I once saw a horse being 'trained' for piaffe being trapped in the corner of a school with a trainer hitting his legs.

Saw one of those in the GP the other day. But Satchmo just looked overdone.
Timing is everything with getting a horse at this level ready for the big event. They need to hit form spot on, and I don't think to be honest either the gold or silver medallists had achieved that though the climate may have been a factor.
Look lower down and although they weren't getting in the medals there were horses who had hit the nail on the head and were excelling themselves. Ashley Holzer's was one of them, and Emma Hindle's, I'd guess.

It was definitely a dummy spitting moment!!!!!!!! He came into the piaffe with no activity in the movement, it was very flat, IW asked for a little more from him, which we all would have done, after all it is the Kur of the Olympics, he then spat the dummy out. She did a great job to get him back on track, which is exactly the same thing that happened in the GP Special.

I noticed that Anky, yet again, did not do a halt at the end of her test, wonder how they marked that!!!!!!! If the halt is not shown then five judges should have given her a big fat 0. She is so clever at it, come in as if to halt, throw your hands in the air to get the crowd screaming so that you have an excuse not to halt.

To me the real star of the games was Reval and Steffan Peters, what a horse and he's only 10!!!!! Absolutely stunning, he should have been in the medals. He will be your gold medal winner at the 2012 games.

I'm glad you've said you thought Reval was a star - so did I. In fact I would go as far to say I thought his test was far more stunning to watch than Anky's and Isabelle's. Looks like the big names have won yet again because they are big names. I was hugely disappointed in the marking.
I truly hope Steffan Peters and Reval make 2012 - definately a combination to watch.

And don't start me on Anky not halting. Her horse just jigged back and forth sideways - didn't stand still for a second but hey it's Anky so lets give her a decent mark regardless. Grrr.

The final halt is not marked in the GP Freestyle! Hence Anky not loosing marks for her lack of halt. It would (could?) only have been reflected in the submission collectives.

Exactly, rider judging at its best!!!!!!!!

Its about time that the top international judges took their job seriously and were not intimidated by the name on the top of the score sheet.

Reval and Steffan are the ones I enjoyed watching the most. Stunning.

No, but it's marked in the GP and she got 4 for a salute, when the whole movement is Halt. IMMOBILITY. Salute.
That's giving more marks for the salute than either the halt or the immobility. Which is nuts.

In the freestyle there is a mark for halt at the beginning and end of your test.

Not quite sure what you are saying,

I was replying to a pp who said the final halt is not marked in the kur.

so I was taking her word for it, since I can't remember one way or the other, and going on to point out that it is definitely marked in the GP.

No idea if the halts are marked individually, but Anky got a 10 for her transitions - surely that should have included transitions to halt (or not, in this case!)

Oh, got it now

Just checked and the 'transitions' mark is for piaffe/passage. However, there is a mark for:

The entrance and halts at the
beginning and the end of the test

So I would just love to know what she got for that - I don't suppose that's public information, is it?
