Save a greek stray...Con??

Understandable. I do see the problem getting worst as now these dogs may have nowhere to go. I agree sometimes euthansia is the best solution. And it does cost a lot of money to ship dogs, especially overseas. Sorry I took it all the wrong way.

Sorry about that. I was gonna say, as I am not familiar on how to navigate the site. I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice. New doggie is crying in the kennel and managed to open the kennel door and get out and destroy my blanket and sheets on my bed right next to the kennel. Any advice on what I could do to calm her in the kennel and make her quiet and not go into panic mode when I leave? She likes the kennel and goes into with door open during the day and even is fine with door closed except when I leave the room...

If you go to the AAD section of the forum and look on the top left hand corner you'll see the "Start new thread" button and if you post in there you will get loads of helpful answers.

Things to try: leave her with a really nice chewey treat to take her mind off being alone (e.g. Kong with something lovely stuffed in it), try leaving the TV/radio on for company, try covering the crate with a blanket some dogs settle better in the dark, try a DAP collar/diffuser to help with the stress. Also try leaving her for very short periods, often and returning when she is quiet and calm to praise her a lot. I am sure she will get used to it in time.

Ok. Thank you for your help! I think I got one posted now for help. I would try to put a blanket over but she would just pull it through the kennel. I will try some of your other ideas though. Thanks again! Kong idea may be good. I have put her in it for short periods of time, but the second she dont see me she starts up whining.

I've been getting the Greek Animal Rescue newsletter for a while now and it's really grim reading. I think the difference over there is that strays are routinely poisoned or shot and left to die in agony, there's very little veterinary care available and even less animal welfare or rescue places. Dogs are left out in the baking sun, chained to trees to 'guard' livestock for months or years if they're unlucky enough to live that long, with no shelter and little food and water. What makes the papers in this country doesn't even raise an eyebrow over there.

At least over here if a dog can't be rehomed it's humanely destroyed and sad though that is I know which country I'd rather live in if I was a dog!

I think a dog is a dog is a dog and regardless of how much money it costs to adopt one or how much it costs to transport them or how traumatising the journey is I say good on anyone who rescues a dog from that misery :)

Oh and hi everyone....didn't go into hiding again, just couldn't remember my password!!

Just wanted to say its not a con. That's all :) Don't mean people are being rude, but I understand the growing problem in Greece. For some time I have been aware of the tons of animal cruelty that happens there and the lack of education for the people about pets. I can afford to have animals, but for me personally a $300 fee would be hard for me to pay. I could get a dog for cheap on the classified ad page for pets on craigslist but I wanted the oppotunity to adopt. I have been denied in the past by rescues because I do not have a lot of money and me and my boyfriend wanted a dog, but since we didn't live together we couldn't combine our income money to adopt. They didn't allow that. Just wanted to give people my opinion about the rescue. I understand people most likely will not take it to consideration, just thought my opinion would maybe help someone else to adopt.

so, basically the only reason you adoped from abroad was because they werent asking any for any money.

i seriously think they ought to re look at that, how are they funding themselves in the long term to continue this work ?-commendable though it is - if the founder of this rescue in Greece is funding it out of their own pocket she's going to run out pretty soon and then the work will stop.

what worries me too is that other people will be encouraged to adopt from abroad for the same reasons that chrissie herself did; they dont want to pay - and since you cant actually meet your new adoptive dog before it arrives, you really dont know what behaviour issues it has or what you're taking on, as already mentioned by chrissy, they arent house trained so when they get dumped again its going to be the rescue centers in their new country that will have to pick up the pieces and take them in.

As if they're not full enough.

I had stated before that I wasnt able to adopt from around my area because of my living arrangement and the money that I take in every month. I see nothing wrong with finding a dog for free...obviously I am going to be putting money into the dog every month for basic needs and care. The rescue was honestly very thorough about telling me EVERY detail about EVERY dog that I was interested. I knew, along with everyone else who has adopted from this rescue, what I was getting into. For example, I knew the dog had never been in a house before and things were going to be harder for it to get used to. They made sure I knew all this BEFORE I was accepted on the application. I am not telling people to adopt from there because they are the only dogs that deserve it, thats not true. And the rescue is closing down because their funds are cut because of the financial crisis. No need to worry about people adopting from here ever again. People had started the thread on here asking if it was a con, and I said no its not. I knew exactly what I was getting into with the dog and I will not give up on her. Its the same thing with any dog really. If someone doesnt want it, they pass it along. Its sad. I agree with what you are saying about if people dont understand all the attention that the dog needs when coming from these situations where they dont understand how to act in a house setting, they shouldnt be adopting then.

There is always going to be homeless pets, and those numbers are going to increase regardless of if a dog comes to another country from Greece. People simply dont spay/neuter!!! At least the dogs they adopt out from this rescue are fixed...that is very important!

All of us on here are correct in our opinions. People are going to do what they want to do and think what they want to think. Nothing wrong about that, right? I dont mean to argue with anyone because I am really not trying to. Too much on my mind right now:o I know it is not a good idea to adopt overseas because in my own country there are plenty of dogs who need a chance at life, but when I saw what was happening in Greece, my heart went out to those poor animals, just like the tourists who visit there and want to do anything to help. I looked at the face of the dog that I adopted and I just couldnt fight the feeling that I wanted her to be with me. There are dogs that for sure need help around me, and if I wouldve had my application to adopt one approved, I would have a dog from my own state right now. Unfortunalty it just didnt work out that way and my heart just couldnt give up on sharing my life with a rescue pet. I respect everybodys opinion on here about this.

A friend's parents live in Greece and help run a cat sanctuary. They often have holiday makers begging them to let them take a cat home. They refuse and tell them to visit the CPL when they return home.
