went to the Shire Horse museum in cornwall while on hol last week, and spent the whole afternoon there. the shires and clydesdales were lovely, so noble, but what touched me more were the suffolk punches. people dont realise how endangered the breed is; they are as rare as the Giant Panda! apparently there are only 9 registered breeding stallions left, one of which we met whilst there. they are beautiful animals, but we will not be able to appreciate them much longer if the breed is allowed to die out. there were 13 (i think) at this farm, but the owner is in his 80s and so far has not come across anybody with the same passion who could keep it going in the future. so sad! i would breed them, if i had the money and facilities.
 
was that near camborne, Brea and redruth? if it was did you see their HUGE liver chestnut Stallion? i think he's liver chestnut!!! i keep my ''project pony'' up the road from them!!!

yes it was, the stallion (william, i think!) was tethered in a field next to the drive (because apparently he once jumped out and mounted a mare who was being ridden past! didnt see pony tho, not that i can remember!
 
the stud where my girl is from a doing a bredding programme for Suffolk Punches with the soecity.
They started this year so they are doing something about it

They are lovely - but can I add we need to save the Cleveland Bay too

used to be a stud near dorking about 12 years ago - saw the s.p. ridden past regularly - really nice looking ride but WIDE !

they are fantastic

someone I know wants to get a ride/drive next year to do real farm work and I've said to him first choice = s.p.

alternative is Friesian
 
I have suffolk cross and only wish he was a pure breed and a stallion - they are the best type and breed of horse I have ever known, seriously, they are everything.

like others - if only I had the money and space !!!
 
I was at their stud at the weekend - Darren was doing an assessment for me of Stinky, which was rather positive.

Their stallion is wonderful, from France, and they have some nice mares - just as well as my OH was not impressed at the 3 hour journey we had - stuck on the M25 and was very happy at seeing some "proper" horses.

I understand that the Society is finally relenting and allowing stock from the US to be recognised in their stud book.

Not my favorite heavy - no disrespect to those who have them, but I am addicted to the clydesdale and then the shires. I have also noticed a lot of people who prefer these heavy breeds don't seem so keen on the Suffolk, so maybe this is part of the problem.
 
I'm from suffolk originally & have always loved suffolk punches, used to be a farmer near me who was really into them and still used them to plough etc .
Would love to have one now but they are like hens teeth!
 
I saw these at an East Anglian show last year ...or was it the year before?

Apparently, I'm related to someone who judges them...there can't be many people who do that if there are so few of the breed around now!
 
Very nice horses but realistically they are not desirable or needed any longer. Barely anyone in England uses horses to work anymore therefore the Suffolk Punch will likely become extinct.

We have a lot of Belgiums over here - they have survived because Canada is years behind the UK and we still use Belgiums for work on many farms - they will likely be in the same situation as your SP's in 10 or 20 years time though.
 
We have got 6 in the field next to our yard and they have got another half a dozen or so in another field. They breed them and they are gorgeous.....very vocal though, when one starts they all start
