I generally use shavings with my two but at a cost of over £20 a week (2 x bales each). I have now had to change to straw. I can get barley straw for £1.50 a bale. The downside is that I have to spray it with a weakened solution of Jeyes Fluid or Fly will eat it. Also it makes more mess on the muck heap so I have the extra expense of removal ~(but then cheaper to buy). The up side is it is so much cheaper. With the two of them (on rubber matting) it works out at 3 bales a week for them both. £4.50 v £20+ I have found that with shavings I remove two full wheelbarrows a day from each, (thats on rubber matting too)! I cannot just use the matting on its own, its slippery when wet and they soil their rugs, gross. What do you use and Why?
