Perhaps I’ve been lucky so far as I’ve just seen my first England flag on a vehicle. Thankfully I wasn’t riding as even our horses, who are brilliant in heavy traffic, get upset at the flapping noise. I wish they would give out a safety warning about them.

You must be lucky, they are all over the cars in W Sussex! In town that is though

Can you get ahead of the curve & have a practise with some if you're worried?

Having done loads of desensitization, mine doesn't give two hoots about flags (or tarpaulin, or bunting, shower curtains or anything like that) anymore - either on cars/in gardens or me holding them on the ground or when ridden. We can canter quite happily waving a big flag in the air, which I'm sure is a skill that might come in handy one day ?

I imagine they will be everywhere soon so I might drag some our of storage and have a quick play to just check we are still good.

It’s not the waving of them, its the ripping noise they make.

I appreciate that but by waving them, riding with them or having them upright in an arena/field - especially on a windy day - it exposes them to the rippling noise too :)

Or play around in the yard or safe space with putting them on a friend's car and play around riding up to them and past them & then having the car pass until they're more comfortable with them?

They've made it through to the quarter finals, the way they're getting on you'd think they'd already won it. We aren't gonna hear the end of "footballs coming home" now ???

Me and a hacking friend did this with our mares a few years ago when the flags first appeared and found the desensitisation very useful. We took some time and care with the process and I think it helped a lot.

Someone on a motorcycle might also work, if the area available to practise on isn't big enough to use a car.

I think they have already won it, even if they don’t lift the cup. Beating Germany in the Euros was huge :).

OP I think it’s perfect possible to get horses used to them by desensitising at home. If you have a cob or a shetland like me, just put some pony nuts on and next to flapping carrier bags on a windy day and watch them just ignore the noise ?

Here, everyone has a flagpole in their garden, flags are flown on special flag days and you are allowed to fly the national flag for family celebrations, so, although we are rural, we are very used to them already, as flags Are flying often. They’re thankfully not on vehicles over here. Might be worth some desensitisation, to prepare if there’s lots on vehicles. Stay safe everyone.

No, after Sweden lost to Ukraine yesterday evening, you can wait with the desensitisation training, for a few months at least. But if Sweden wins a medal in football in the Olympics, or later in Winter wins Gold in the next Icehockey Championship tournament, then anything can happen.

On previous occasions when such things have happened, it has lead to flags flapping both here and there, and talking about flapping things, also some Swedish men bathing in public fountains, and not always with their clothes on. I'm not sure what desensitisation training that might prepare neither horses, nor you, for such events though.

Sounds familiar, we're currently in the midst of the Twelfth Madness, flags are a fluttering from every lamppost, telegraph pole and house windows at the moment, I'm rural too so not too bad for me thankfully but the village is in full swing

I don't mean to be inflammatory but the fact it's taken them so long says more to me about Germany than it does England, however I wish them luck in their endeavours ??

I'm Welsh so know how your horses feel asmp ;). I'm totally sick of the overblown hype too.

I'm not anti-English at all but hate the way England = UK and UK = England to the vast majority of the media. The worst was the look ahead to the England v Germany game (3 days in advance of the game) at half time of the Wales v Denmark game. They won't even focus on Wales when Wales are playing!

I'm keeping an eye out for cheap car flags or regular sized flags, for desensitization purposes. Probably be nice and cheap when we inevitably lose ;P
