Just over a week ago we lost our beautiful boy Bob. We did a late check at 10pm and all was fine. I got up there at 5am the next day (no, I don't sleep!) And he was unable to bear weight on his right hind. Cue emergancy call out and a tearful phonecall to my other half who owned Bob, asking him to come home. He was just getting in his truck to go to Wales, thank god I called him.

When the vet arrived and examined him, it was just a simple thorn. But it had gone in at a crucial point, straight into the tendon, and infection had set in fast. There was nothing that could be done to help our wonderful boy, and once my other half came to say goodbye he was put to sleep on the yard with his mouth full of carrots. Bob had only been with us a year but we loved him so much.

Everyone please, please check your horses twice a day. Thank god I found Bob when I did before he suffered even more, a freak accident that could never have been prevented, but we are so proud of him just for being Bob

oh, I am so terribly sorry. What an awful freak accident. I sympathise so much with you at the sudden loss. I lost my rising 4 year old 6 weeks ago to acute EGS. Still haven't come to terms with it. Run free, Bob. x x

Aww thanks gys, and sorry Tobiano that must have been awful, I am just so pleased I'm an early bird I can't bear tothink of him waiting for me. Its all part of havig them but it doesnt make it any easier!

What a horrible freak accident, I lost my young boy last year in rather similar circumstances. We and the vets are pretty sure that he had eaten something prickly (probably hawthorn) and it had gone down into the stomach and pricked into the gut wall and let the E coli bacteria from the gut into the blood stream. He was very very ill, was 4 weeks in hospital but in the end we had to say goodbye. I know how you feel, it leaves you reeling.
