Says Brown, looks Black...

Changed my mind, I CAN now see a hint of brown - between the hind legs for one.. I also take it the mane and tail will keep a hint of brown too - or is that just 'baby hair'?
 
Harry is black in winter but a nice brown with dun undertones in the summer; he's down as brown.
Sparks is almost dark bay; I told everyone he is dark bay, but no, he has a brown muzzle so he's brown too!
 
There used to be a superstition in the TB industry regarding black horses. I don't know if it still exists. I had a black TB stallion years ago but his passport stated "Very dark brown". I believe it was deemed unlucky to have a black horse. I have no idea why.

You don't get Black Purebred TB's. And every horse registered in the Wetherby's Stud Book will be listed as Brown and not Black. They may appear black but they are really a Muddy Black - have a brown-ish winter coat or brown tnged summer coat, get brown bits in the mane and tail, brown cat hairs, browning around the eyes and muzzle. To all outwards appearances they are predominantly black.

With outcrossings now, and thus Non-Tb's, you can get true blacks but they will always be registered as Brown.

I never knew that! I'd love a black TB too!! Oh well, Dark Brown it is then.
