Hiya, I have a 4yo coloured gelding (only had him 3 months) who, about 2 weeks ago, suddenly developed a burnt looking crusty nose (despite damp not very sunny weather here in Devon) and scabby/raw cracked patches on both elbows (both on whites bits of him) about 4cm across. The nose has got better but the elbows are still raw with only slight improvement. Hibiscrub wash and antiseptic cream has made no difference. Older coloured cob in same yard has similar but less severe patches on both elbows, also slow to heal. Both horses stabled on rubber mats with ample bedding (older one on sawdust, mine on mescanthus) with daily turnout in separate paddocks and eat healthily, are in light but regular work and well groomed/shod/loved etc. Flies don't seem to be particularly bothersome either.

I guess the nose could be related to something he grazed on making him photo sensitive (we have some buttercups and red clover etc) but can't work out if the elbows are a related problem?? anyone seen similar/got any clues?

I had him checked buy vet yesterday (senior partner at that) for general health check but vet couldn't come up with satisfactory explanation, so thought I'd ask around!

Thanks all :o)

girth? my boy looses the hair on his elbows sometimes and it is girth related. (he has a forwards girth groove and if you watch him move you can see how it rubs even though they seem far enough away!)

My horse has this too, I thought he maybe was getting it worse from lying down, and maybe the wee from the stable iritating the skin...
Cant get rid of it.
BTW he has as clean a bed as he can but does wee a lot.

My old share horse (grey) had dry rough elbows a bit like mild mud fever, it was sort of scabby but never sore. She lived out so not stable related, it really never bothered her and she had it from winter through to spring, think they were just dry! We would shampoo them when doing her mane and tail just as mud would stick to it sometimes and hard to get off otherwise! Maybe you could just moisturise them :-)

My coloured gets a crusty elbow (as I call it anyway ;)), and its only the white one. Its like yellow, scabby, crustyness? I started washing her down with Botanica antiseptic wash after riding or getting her sweaty, then applying MSM cream afterwards. Worked a charm and I haven't noticed it this year :)

My horses elbows did get better last year as he as given an injetion for dermitis on one front leg from a possible snake bite !!!

But I have just sent off for that camrosa cream ..I spoke to them and they said a vet could perscribe a steroid cream but I'll try this first or just put sudoceam or aqueous cream on every day as I haven't really done this.

Try a mineral block that contains Copper and Zinc as these both help strengthen skin and reduce the risk of sunburn.

Often this scabbiness on elbows it sontributed to friction from the heel of the shoe when the horse is lying down. Try putting a sausage boot on his front pasterns - you can make some cheaply and easily using a narrow dog collar and a swim noodle - cut the noodle long enough to go right around the pastern, thread the dog collar through the noodle and you have a sausage boot.

Finally to be sure you have covered all bases, wash with Nizoral shampoo - just in case it is fungal. Nizoral can be bought from a chemist.
