horse came in last tues with scabby swollen fetlock and lame. The swelling has since gone down, but the cuts are still there. Gave it a good wash with hibiscrub and got the scabs off, but skin looks manky and yellow today and is a bit scabby/flakey again.

Any suggestions as to what it could be/what I should be doing. (had vet out but they werent very good!)

Sounds a bit like mud fever to me. Our horse has a similar problem at the moment. We have been putting Sudocream on it and putting gamgee and vet wrap on when he is out, to keep it dry. In the evening we take it off, pick the scabs (if they are black) and leave it to air. Sorry, I'm not very experienced so I would recommend asking a different vet maybe, and get a second opinion.

If it is mud fever, apparently atheletes (sp)

foot powder is really good for treating it. Never used it as my horses hasn't had mud fever (touch wood) but was told by a farrier this for my sisters horse.

definately sounds like mud fever caused by bacteria in the mud. Pig oil and sulphur are what I use to keep it at bay but if he is lame and it is really bad he might need antibiotics and to be kept in the dry till it gets cleared up.

Sounds like mud fever to me too! I have one who swells up and is really lame with it, even with the smallest scabs. Best to hibiscrub and keep in and dry. I use Keratex powder on mine. But it is not too good if the ground is really muddy. You just have to keep them out of the mud

ETA If you hibiscrub try to get the legs towel dry and leave your horse in to really dry before you put anything else on.
