Hi all,

my little irish cob mare has been suffering with some nasty scabs on her back legs for a while now :( she originally had big feathers and bad mites
so after taking the feathers off and getting rid of the mites she still has some nasty scabs they are dry and dont appear to be causing her pain however fetlocks are swollen and these scabs keep appearing

was just wondering if anyone has had any experience of anything like this and what might help

all suggestions greatly appreciated :)

thanks :)

Mud fever? Mallanders? I was given rain scald powder years ago to dot on with a dam cotton bud. I think it was quite effective.

You might want to use oil (Avon Skin So Soft is fab) to soften the scabs so they come off. With cobs, I find you have to keep a close eye on this and treat constantly. Lots of people recommend pig oil and sulphur: you can buy it ready mixed on eBay.

Hiya my little irish cob gelding has these scabs although his front feet are worse affected! After trying all sorts of awkward and messy things to get rid of them I eventually found baby oil to work the best.

After applying it each day for a week his scabs loosen and come away. They do come back and I eventually (after lots of research) decided it must be mallenders which I think is a genetic condition!

So his still has his scabby legs but they do him no harm and regular application of baby oil does the trick :)

Spray with frontline every ten days for a month. Then apply pig oil and sulphur and this needs to be done every 2 - 3 weeks all year round.

PM me an email address and I will send you my very long and detailed note about keeping horses with feather on their legs in healthy show condition.
