I have had my very hairy cob for 3 months now. I noticed that he was chewing his leg and stamping with mites.
He has had his legs clipped (broke my heart!!) and I have been sponging once a week in a weak solution of hibiscrub. I spoke to the vet who agreed with the mites diagnosis and said I could either have 2 injections or try Frontline. I opted for the Frontline, and it seems to have done the trick - no more stamping or leg chewing

He now has scabby legs, particularly bad on his joints (is that mallenders and sallenders or am I thinking of the wrong thing?). I have continued with the hibiscrub, and am applying Wondergel as I have been advised by the yard owner not to put creams on. She says they make it worse and it's better to let the air get to them.
The scabs behind his knees seem quite bad. Has anyone got any tips to help get rid of them. He doesn't like me messing with them at all - he doesn't even like the Wondergel being put on!
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. xXx
 
Someone at our yard had this problem with her hairy legged cob and she got some steroid cream from the vets. She keeps his legs clipped and clean from mud. Another livery used the Frontline treatment as you mention and that worked well for her horse.
 
id use hibiscrub too, but daily and neat onto wet legs to make lather and rinse, and id follow with sudocrem or multiderm for few days, then maybe let air in once scabs are gone. if they are a bit fleshy id use manuka honey, or wound powder. if there is still some pus or discharge id get some anti biotics for him. you could poultice them for day or 2 to clean them up too. so sorry you had to clip your boys legs!
 
We have a lot of cobby tyoes on our yard and they all get this scabby knee problem. We use a variety of methods to deal with them, but I'm afraid that the most effective is to clip the backs of the legs/knees and keep them clean, dry and hibiscrubbed to a lather every day.
We have tried Flamazine cream (from the vet) and it works sort-of but a lot of the horses blistered after use
Neem oil (search "stop it all") is a really good herbal remedy. It smells a bit funny but we have used it on all kinds of skin conditions from mud fever to sweet itch and on various horses it has cleared up a treat!! It can't be used on broken skin but seems to be quite effective!
But in all honesty, we leave their knees sometimes and even tho they go scabby, they dont seem to bother them that much...

I wouldnt put neat hibiscrub on anything......it is *far* too strong like that, and will have the opposite effect, making the legs more scabby in the end!

I have heard about pig oil and sulphur, though cant bear to try it myself! But have used liquid parafin successfully to get on top of the scabby legs. However, it needs to be done *every* day! My mare has the scabby legs, but it doesnt appear to bother her, where applying lotions and combing the scabs off did, so I just leave them now!

My mare also has the dectamax injection 3/4 times a year to keep the mites at bay.....it works out much cheaper than frontline.....
 
I use either zinc & castor oil cream or if bad pig oil and sulphur. Keep the area well clipped and scab free. However, once they have had this it is prone to come back in same place so you will need to keep an eye on it.
 
After many years of having piebalds, and having the same problems, I have now discovered pig oil and sulphur!! It's just a mineral oil (think baby oil) with sulphur added, it doesn't smell too much at all.

I love this stuff - I have kept my boy's feathers and just rub the oil in all round his lower legs - it has cleared his mallenders, and any mud just brushes off when dry. Keeps his mane and tail white and silky. Can't recommend it enough.
 
I had a PM from Theresa_F and it was brilliant. I have two hairy cobs, one had very scabby itchy legs. I used Frontline spray and then resprayed after 10 days, now use pig oil and sulphur to keep mud and mites away. Scabs and itching have gone.
 
I am another one for pig oil and sulphur. great that you have clipped the legs as it means you can now treat it. Dectomax injections also help if mitey especially if banging their feet alot. This is a common problem in cobs so will be loads of advice on here. I have also used Flamazine cream with great effect but you have to get this off your vet
