scabby legs update 2, vets been!

rang vets this morning to see what time they were coming to be told we are coming to your yard to see another horse this morning! got to the yard and YO's pony (whose about 40 bless her ) has the same scabs on her bottom lip.Otto who was being seen for something else has the start of it on his nose and a tiny patch on his leg.there is another horse who has sunburn on his nose but his scabs are the same as the girls so i wonder. they all have this photosensitive thing. vet was fab and got the bloods through and all there livers are ok. they are currently banned from going outside for a week to ten days and have to be hibscrubbed twice a day then some cream applied followed by sunblock that the head vet makes. if scabs heal ok then vet will come back in 10 days or so if they dont she will come sooner. she did phone me this afternoon and ask if the horses were insured! do i need to inform insurance company that there may be a claim or wait and see if i do need to. also has anyone heard of UV rugs and boots for horses? the YO mentioned you can get them
 
Seems a little odd that they have all become sensitive suddenly, particularly since your mare has never had a problem of this type in the past. It does suggest there is something to which they have access that is making them all sensitive, it could be in the grazing, the water or the hay or some kind of local bacteria?
 
Ottinmeg..glad you have it sorted!! you will soon get rid of it..have vets given you aqueous (sp??) cream to clear it up..that works really well. It is a total pain tho..mine gets exactly the same thing!! Equilibrium make sun boots and a little nose hood thing which works really well but to be honest in the hottest of days i find it just as easy to bring them in and turn them out again at night.. if you do decide to buy the sun boots they tend to come up quite small imo..especially if you have a chunky horse with quite a lot of feather!! good luck at least you have caught it early!!

With my mare if it is really sunny i bring her in during the day and out at night,but i have got some turnout chaps if i do put her out during the day,but to be honest are not that effective as make the legs sweat alot.I also plaster her in high factor baby suncream which works really well.
Did you mention to your vert about st.johns wart?im just interested if i did get the right plant!!
Once it has been diagonosed it really is easy to deal with and keep at bay.
 
strange thing is that sophie ,who only has one white sock and has lived in the same field as meg since they went to this yard is totally unaffected. they dont currently have hay, there is nothing else in the paddock except grass BUT the water butt is one of these that has a ballcock and just fills itself up and doesnt look like its been cleaned since last year so could be a suspect. think ill give them fresh water out the tap and lug it up there from now on.
vet said there are a few other horses around our area getting it and there is a lot of it about in general this year
not sure what cream ive been given, got to go and get a big pot and the sunblock tomorrow so will have a look then.
you did get the right plant tally and the vet mentioned st johns wort but there isnt any around the farm anywhere ,there is loads of buttercups in the boggy bit in the girls paddock but vet said they tend to cause ulcers around the mouth rather than the scabby things on megs legs!
now that they have got this are they going to get it every year as soon as the sun comes out and is it only on really hot days they need to come in?
 
Equilibrium do sun shading horse chaps. Don't know if they are uv proof though.

I had a Rambo sheet that was UV proof so they must be about.
 
Good that seems things will get sorted. It is weird how it is affecting so many at the same time though? Keep us posted on progress.
