not necessarily its bacteria , or its rain scald. Google it ad look for some pictures to see if you can match it up

Or look on the threads on the forum
Good luck its a pain once you have it!

does sound like mud fever, quickest way to clear that up is to pick all scabs off, and treat with a antibacterial cream, every day, should be gone in a week or poss 2, keep legs thoroughly dry, ie no turnout, cured horrific cracked heels this way earlier this winter, pony had not been in mud only sandschool, he was very lame with it, but back jumping and sound within 2 weeks

Sounds like it could be mud fever, please rememeber mud fever is a slang word used for Dermatophilus Congolensis which is the bacteria in your horses skin, they don't have to be wollowing around in wet mud to get this.

It can lay dormant under the skin for a while and break out at any time, not just winter.

1) Rince legs down with cold water first to close open pores, this stops spread of infection and risk to further infection from the any dirt.

2)Then was with an anitfungal shampoo along with a few cap fuls of hibiscrub. Make sure you get all loose skin and scabs off, this may be uncomfortable for your horse as they may be sore but you must get them all off.

(You may need to soak his legs in hot water to soften the scabs so its less uncomfortable for the horse)

3)Dry properly but do not cover with bandages, warm wet conditions only make it worse.

4) Buy some Flamozine Cream from your vet, apply over the sores/scabs and massage in to the skin for a week.

If your horse has feathers, you will need to clip them off so you can manage the area better, hot sweety feathers around the heals of your horse will only contribute to the problem.

Once the condition has cleared up, you will need to wash your horses legs around once a week with an antifugal wash and hibiscub to keep on top of it so it doesn't rise its ugly head again.

Follow the above and your problem will resolove and never come back I promise you.

Happy Washing!

My coloured suffered from scabby legs due to having very pink skin and we treated it with hibiscrub as recommended by my vet....oddly it made it worse but turned out she had a reaction to hibiscrub! So just bare this in mind

When I had finally got rid of it I now feed her the NAF supplement Mud Guard and she has never had it since (fingers crossed
