putting this in here as no one viewing in vets. noticed the pony stamping her front foot a lot this evening and an awful lot of flies showing an interest. she has a scabby area on the side of her foot about an inch above the coronet band, i could see a lot of pink but a lot of the scabs ,which are black, have come off , she also has the same on the other leg in the same place which is bigger and the scabs are not broken. is this likely to be mites ? i will take a pic of it tomorrow as im not very good at explaining things! oh and she keeps biting at the leg with the broken scabs on. she also suffers with mild sweetitch (mane and tail ) and i have also recently (approx 2 weeks ago) started her on a suppliment called think fly just in case either of these things may have triggered it.

Could be mites, he may be causing the scabs himself when he is biting them.
I use frontline on my cobs in their feathers about once a month, they have stopped itching completely. Just make sure there is no wounds/scabs etc when you put the frontline on and do a test patch first just in case.
Oh I just put a couple of drops in the back of the feathers and it works all over their legs.

I agree with the others, it does sound like mites. Is she feathered? I had my shire injected with Dectomax (I know this is wrong spelling), two injections 2 weeks apart - no stamping or biting

If she isnt heavily feathered, as someone else said, use Frontline and massage in really well - job done.

Llwyncwn, she does have feather but not a great deal of it. is it just best to just call the vet rather than try and treat it myself? also her fieldmate (my mare) has a lot more feather than moose and if it is mites is soph likely to get them too ?
i will post pics tomorrow but will call vet in the morning.
thanks for all replies so far

If Soph isnt stamping or showing signs, I would Frontline both of them twice with a 2 week break between the treatment. If this doesnt work then call the vet or google Heavy Horse Supplies and ask about 'Pig oil & Sulphur'. I think its Teressa on here who swears by it.

havnt seen soph stamp as such but she did do a weird thing earlier ( i say weird as i have never seen a horse do it before )she put her left back foot over the right leg and gave it a good old rub, didnt even know a horse could even do that with it back legs!

, then she used the inside of the same leg to rub the left one some more...

Some horses are more susceptable to midges and bites much as we humans are. I had a lightweight cob in a couple of years ago and he had very little feather but suddenly started stamping and chewing his legs. 2 treatments with frontline and all cleared up. He was turned out with a couple of others with similar feather but neither showed any signs.

Gyp does this if not frontlined, he has rubbed himself raw before.

vet came to see mine this week, my horse has full feather, scabby legs and itches a lot, i asked vets advice, he took a look and said, if a horse has mites they will stamp their feet and itch a lot, but by having mites and full feather he had also got bacteria that causes itching, his legs wernt too bad but vet recomended i chopped off his feathers(he could regrow his feathers back after treatment), shampood his legs twice a week with medicated shampoo for a few weeks to get rid of the bacteria, and also to give him 2 injections 10 days apart to kill any mites. hope this info helps.
