Scabby legs???

What would all you knowledgeable horsey people do?
My mare has itchy back legs that have formed scabs. It is from the fetlock up towards the hock, outside is worse than inside of the legs. She has nothing at all lower than the fetlock so don't think it can be mudfever? Mud in the fields isn't that deep yet!
She really enjoys them being scratched even to the point when I hose them she twists her leg and leans into the water and pulls faces like she does when you rub her fave itchy spots.
I have been hosing down and using Hibiscrub wash for a few days now.
Any ideas what it could be? Would you do anything else? How long would you wait 'til you decided you might need to get the vet?
She reacted really badly to bitey flies and insects all summer so wondering if it just another type of horrid bitey thing that she is reacting to?

not sure if this is any help but my mare has a similar thing at the moment, she suffers each year (for the past 3) from fly bites on her face to the point where she scratches herself raw and bleeding, its rather distressing to witness, we have proflavine from the vets to treat her which i believe is discontinued now but our vets still has a small supply left, its a yellow liquid, anyway, whilst her face is clearing up her legs then suffer a similar scabby fate, so we have been treating with the proflavine,

another product that seems to work fairly well is 'sudacrem' for people, i think its for babies bums

you can get it in the supermarket or chemist, its really thick so protects the scabs well and stops the horse biting at them so much.

i will be interested in any other advise on this too as it is taking so long for honeys to clear up too. hows your mares face? ok?

good chance it feather mites - even if she doesnt have feathers! Chorioptes mites. has she had these scabs on and off before or are they completely new?
Either way - Flamazine cream after washing with Hibiscrub every few days (and drying afterwards!!) should help to clear it up.
 
I don't think mud fever is always necessarily related to the amount of mud thats around, but not sure on that one....

Mine has had a few scabs on the back of his fetlocks recently. I have been washing them with just water, drying them and then putting on liquid paraffin. It seems to do his legs the world of good though, and I am pretty sure it can't do any harm. It is pretty inert, and works as a barrier and a moisturiser. It also helps prevent mud fever so I am told, so now I am all set for winter.

Daisy-duke: it is just her legs not her pretty face! It was only her bum that got bitten in the summer and she ended up with big blistering scabs, I think it was because she moved from the South east to Cornwall so different bugs! Sudocream really worked for those. Hope your horsey gets better

Glenruby: thanks will get some of that cream, I thought it might be mites, when I first noticed it coincided with her starting to come in at night so thought it might be mites in the straw (last bale from last year) so emptied it all out and washed down and put in new, but it has got worse.

Stencilface: I'm not that hot on mud fever but assumed it tended to be on parts that were in mud/wet and her hocks are pretty clean and dry!

Off to go look up about feather mites now

you can get some thing called foot stamp from global herbs witch says it stops the itching! treat it has mud fever and see if it clears up was it with tea tree shampoo dry well apply some flammazine witch you can get from the vets do that for a week twice daily if no better call the vets!
