Scabby lumps

I changed from the sweetitch cover all rug this week to an (uncleaned) medium weight turnout. This horse is out most of the time but they do come in for a few hours for hay and feed daily. A couple of days ago he had what I thought were insect bites along the neckline of the rug, about 5 or 6 pustules on one side of his neck (not the same as his SI). Today I took his rug off to give him a groom and he pulled a face, he now has these lumpy scabs running along in an almost straight line on the underside of his neck. Could it be rainscald or has something hatched out in the rug? I have washed the SI rug in a non-bio powder today so plan to swap tomorrow for a few hours and give the turnout a bit of a brush off/airing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
 
My boy gets the same if I don't wash his numnah regularly enough.. His go down on their own & as king as I keep his stuff clean he doesn't get them.
 
How could you tell? Would rainscald be under the neck? I suppose rain could have run downfrom his neck and collected underneath? Hmm, not sure, damnhorses!
 
Do you know what, Jen Hunt it might be exactly that, after he was worked he was hotter there so we hibiscrubbed it and will wait and see- oh and I put a lighter rug on!
 
I'd go with that, also have issues though lots of things seem to irritate his skin to cause them. Good cleaning and sudocreme + sulphur powder works for us.
 
I used sulphur powder on him a couple of years ago when I wasn't sure what was causing his sweet-itch symptoms but it's sweetitch! I got put off sudocream when I read that some horses are allergic to it but might give it another go.
 
My SI pony (who is completely controlled) gets similar sounding lumps and I have no idea what causes them but they don't seem to bother him. My friend's SI horse also has odd lumps too.
 
My new shetland pony arrived a few months ago and she was covered in scabby lumps all down her crest, underside of her neck, chest, base of ears and rump. Started giving her an oily diet of alfa a oil, fibre nuggets and a nice dollop of vegetable oil and within a couple of weeks they were almost gone, she still has some dry skin but it's definitely improving.

Due to get the vet out soon for vaccs etc so if she still has any lumps left I'll ask him to have a look and report back :)
