during the summer my 3yr old mare had nasty bumps all over her body, we put it down to a pollen allergy but now she has really scabby skin, the vet came to do her jabs and said its not bothering her but i just cant seem to get rid of them. she lives out, medium weight rug on which i swap every few days or so, i have hibiscrubbed it, put antibacterial cream on it and give her a really good groom but the scabs just come back. Shes a chestnut mare and does seem to have sensitive skin ie sunburn, allergies and rain scald. any suggestions?

I have the same - chestnut mare 4 yrs, first appeared as a 2 yo. Lumps in the summer, scabs in the winter. Tried various feeds, linseed, lotions and potions but unfortunately still not found any thing that helps. Will watch this post with interest.

I would use a medicated shampoo( proper prescription one) and add linseed and possibly oil to the diet to try to improve things. Zinc and vit e are good too. Are the bumps gone and scans left? You may also require a long course of antibiotics.

Mines the same. Hes been diagnosed with allergies to dust mites. Hes has lumps on his stomach and barrel, but now turned scabby. Hes on immune therpay and linseed oil its made a difference but not fully cleared. I am looking into feed micronised linseed wondered if anyone had a better experience to the micronised rather than the oil?

I have the same problem, allergy testing is ongoing at present with skin biopsies just recently taken.

My horses bumps burst and leaked serum too so leaving him a bit scabby. I found the best thing out of all the stuff I tried was washing him in Nizoral shampoo. You can get it in Boots for about £6.

Just dampen his coat, dilute the shampoo in some warm water so that it gets right down to the skin. Wash all over with the solution and leave it on for 10 mins then rinse. The scabs came away fairly easily with this and the ones I didn't pick have come away themselves.

Not a great time of year to have to bath but needs must sometimes.

just wondered if there maybe anything that would help in her feed like an antibacterial herb maybe? i will give linseed a go, she doesnt like baths at the best of times and as its sooo cold at the moment i dont want to get her too wet! the lumps/scabs are from her shoulders over her barrell and on her bum i have a good thick toothed rubber curry/massager that she quite likes me using it brings some off but they do come back. I like to change her rug regularly too and put black antibacterial powder on her when i do. i also found that thovex cows udder cream is great on mud fever and helps on the scabs on her body a bit.

Been using micronised linseed since the first post but no changes as yet, will see it through then may try linseed oil failing that im out of ideas unless theres a spray , cream or powder as she hates bath time and its too cold to give her one!

Hi just seen your post as my horse has the same thing! Has anyone got further updates? Mine is a chestnut native and have been advised to cut out barley and molasses as I'm told this could be the cause. Any info would be greatly appreciated 😀

I think gingers are inherently skin problematic! no improvement with mine since he has been on linseed, also only gets speedibeet or fast fibre, gets scabby bits all round, in summer think triggered by insect bites.. winter possibly heat bumps/sweating

For him sudocreme with added sulphur powder seems to be the best thing and gets and scabs cleared quickly and we do a daily check running hands over coat as they aren't always visible. He is also better clipped (although isn't in full enough work for a full one of those currently)

ps fungal treatment (imaverol) has helped a bit in the past but not resolved it completely.

Thanks for the update Ester. I'm having bloods done on Thurs as a precaution then probably a biopsy. He's been clipped to make treatment easier but sudocreme / Hibiscrub seem to make it worse! Now got a specialist shampoo to try. I just want a definitive answer 😡

have you had skin scrapes done??

could be fox mange

sorry havent been on for a while, shes made some improvement but not sure what thats down too , shes fed cool mix and chaff with my home made mixture of sea kelp, magnesium sulphate and linseed i brush her less to stop any spread of bacteria, still in a light to medium rug so that she doesnt get too warm, i will clip her next year as shes only 3 and not doing any work til spring, yes the hair comes out in clumps with the scabs. I didnt get any scrapes done as vet wasnt too concerned, shes kept with other horses and they are all fine. the nizoral cream helped a bit too it seemed to lift the scabs and clear the skin a bit underneath but the tubes are quite small and made the rugs a bit yucky, washing and swapping the rugs every fortnite seems to be good too !

Thanks for replies - Thought I would update incase someone else stumbles across this thread or finds it useful. We have now discovered that the lumps/bumps were down to something in his balancer so I am going to have a skin test done. I'm told barley and molasses can cause this in natives. Bloods came back clear and the bumpy leg issue is related to the allergy - I have been given a anti dandruff type shampoo to try to clear them up! :D
