Please say if you think this should be in veterinary section - just figured it would get more reads here

My daughter was grooming a friend's pony at the yard tonight and we noticed some hard lumps around the saddle area. After parting the hair I found these hard scabs with a yellowy sort of colour - like dried pus???

There was about 5 seperate ones on his back and they are no bigger than a 5p piece. We picked the scab of one and it came off to reveal raw skin that was a bit watery??? Have left the rest as we don't want to make them sore.

Does anyone know what they could be? The owner and everyone else at the yard had no idea either......

The pony is Welsh Mountain Sec A, bout 21yo and has not been ridden for 6 years.

many thanks!

Yes, sounds very much like rain scald. I am treating one hear at the mo. Soften the scabs first with either sudocream, liquid parafin, baby oil etc. Once soft, pick scabs off and treat with anti bacterial. Camrosa is supposed to be very good too.

Not necessarily rain scald my mare had some that sound exactly the same about a month after I bought her and they couldn't have been rain scald because she is rugged.

YO suggested that the rug she came in might have had bugs in it so we washed it and never had another problem. Washed off where the scabs had been with dilute hibiscrub and left them to the air
