Hiya!

My 7yro TB has been suffering with a scabby willy for about 3 months now and it's not improving at all. I cleaned his sheath about 2 months ago but I'm not keen one doing it too often. My friend advised me to use baby oil on his sheath and his penis to soften the scabs so that they fall off. This worked slightly but I noticed today that it's now really bad again!

there is no smell or discharge so I'm sure there's no infection there. Does anyone have any suggestions please as I'd like to get rid of this problem properly!

oh, he only lets me see it to make me aware of the problem but puts it away when I try to treat it so the baby oil generally gets sprayed in and around his sheath.

thanks! Xxx

Have you had this checked by a vet? Only saying this as a friend casually mentioned something similar to a vet at vaccination time and it turned out to be cancerous. Pony is ok but has had said appendage amputated.

My older gelding needs his sheath cleaning quite regularly, especially in warm weather. I find warm water with a teeny bit of Hibiscrub works well. Rinse well and dry.

Not baby oil or hibiscrub. Lanolin or and warm water or sheath cleaning gel which has lanolin in, you do need to get a hold of it and give it a good clean as by spraying up in to it yes the gunk is coming loose but also staying up inside the sheath and possibly reattaching itself and just getting gunkier, try grabbing it then rubbing him gently on the inside of his leg high up, he shouldnt withdraw it then. A firm hold will keep it out, you wont hurt him.

I know of THREE horses this has happened to. With one of the ponies losing several inches of his 'you know what' and the other two having all their bits removed and the 'plumbing' rerouted with the result that they now have to pee like mares.
I'd definitely have it checked out just in case.

Assuming you mean scabs and not just normal flakes it's a job for very dilute hibiscrub and some fuciderm gel .
The horse might need antibiotics .
I think I would get the vet infected willys can cause some nasty problems .

This may be simply the usual 'gunk' that some geldings accumulate, but if possible you should get it checked as people above are absolutely right - squamous cell carcinoma can develop in this area resulting in resection of some or all of the penis.

Please get a vet to check. My boy had squamous cell carcinoma, had to have it amputated and his ureter re routed. 3 weeks at Rossdales to save his life but a year later he is still with us x

There is a good video on you tube about cleaning the gunk off.
It is a link in the student research folder with
