Scabs on cannon bone

My horse has some stubborn scabs on the side of his hind cannon bine. I noticed it a couple of months back and thought he had injured himself so cleaned and used sudacream. However they are not healing and I read about keratosis but I thought it only happened on the front of the cannon bone?

Anyway I bought some benzoyl peroxide cream and have been applying it but not sure if this is the right thing to apply?

Any advice please?

I think you can get that greasy scab stuff anywhere, one of mine gets it on the back of the leg occasionally. is it like that? I find a good gentle scrub every week with povidone iodine is pretty effective and also keeping any boots etc super clean.

The scabs are quite tough and I wonder if it’s keratosis? They wouldn’t come off easily, not that I would try. Not sure if I need an anti bacterial or anti fungal wash?

My old boy used to get it, gold label wonder gel cleared it up although it took some time, I put it on twice a day and could gradually pick the edges of the scabs off very carefully, it was worse on his hinds and did go to the side in places.

We have a long history of scabs
sudocreme and sulphur powder works best for us but does turn everything a sticky fluorescent yellow.

Any pics?

Sorry couldn't comment as well as my samples defrosted :D

Although it is tricky to see I think given the timeline, the fact that they aren't keen to come off even though you have been creaming for a couple of months etc and I'm presuming not booting that bit to re-irritate (please say if wrong on that) I'd probably err on getting the vet to look it over (I'd probably decream and leave them for a bit so they can skin scrape).

No, definitely not had any boots on. I’ve ordered a product which was recommended and this arrives tomorrow. I’ll see if that helps, if not I’ll get the vet out

Well his leg got worse with swelling and heat. Vet has been out, clipped the area and cleaned it. I attach a picture below. To be honest I don’t think either of us know what has caused it. It looks like an old wound but he’s done nothing in the year I’ve owned him. Anyway, he’s had a steroid jab, on antibiotics and I have Flamazine cream so hopefully we’ve got it under control.

Hi, my horse has had exactly the same as this. It was on the side he lay down on in his stable. Could it be the same for your horse? It was at a time we were using straw bedding but we changed back to shavings as it was difficult to keep the straw as clean and dry due to the way the stable drained and the place he would lay down.

As to resolving it, we used Flamazine, but also the vet recommended to apply lots of vaseline and to let that loosen the scabs, so I would put that on and then massage it in, then get on and groom him and after half an hour or so would use dry cotton wool to gently remove the vaseline and loosen the scabs before applying more Flamazine and stable bandaging over night. It just took a couple of times to remove the scabs and the vaseline also moisturised the skin.

However although the skin was very sore the vet didn't feel that it was infected so the above night not be appropriate if the skin is infected.
