When I was grooming Beauty today I founf some scabs on her hind hoof on her fetlock, Just under the ergot. The scabs were very strange some were like just spots, others were bigger and round and some were straight across and long. All the scabs were in lines and there was about 3 lines in total.

I hibi-scrubbed and pulled off the loose scabs, but has anyone got any ideas what they are ?

Jasper had scabs on his off-hind. It was feather mites that had caused a bacterial infection. Vet recommended 15ml Dectomax injection repeated after 10 days, and Malasab shampoo, which his leg is washed in every other day. It is clearing up nicely, although slowly!
Could you maybe post a photo of it?

Tried to draw a picture and it didn't work so i'll describe the best I can

The scabs are directly under the ergot in the curve so you can only see them if you either stretch the leg out right behind or lie with your head upside down on the floor.

The cuts seemed small at first about the same size as a spot then there were 2 or 3 long straight ones that were about a cm long

Does she seem itchy, or have you seen her stamping her feet or chewing at her legs?

Sounds like my horse when he had Dermatitis-he didn't have mud fever, but it was diagnosed as dermatitis, sometimes can be caused by sand as irritant or allergy to something- he was treated with an ointment made up by the vets with anti inflammatories in it.

Becareful mud fever looks similar to the reaction that mites give to feathered horses and often they go untreated. Just because you cut the feathers does not mean you wont get mites all horses pick up mites its just that the feathered horses often react to them.

Would ask the vet if the legs arent better soon. x

Sounds like something my NF had a couple of years ago and she's not feathery. At the time I thought the only thing it could be was a minor touch of mud fever and I washed her fetlocks and put a bit of soothing cream on - scabs disappeared and never came back.

Try pig oil and sulphur off ebay. I saturate my horses legs as soon as he gets a bit itchy and scabby. Then about 4 days later shampoo with tea tree shampoo and rub off scabs and pop on sudocrem to finish. :D
