Scabs on my horse

Ok, so I was on my yard- and my horse was itching like crazy whoever he was In stable in the winter and in the summer. I moved and the itching stopped, and then I've come back onto said yard. He is on the same bedding as before, Same rugs etc, however the scratching has started again and you can feel like lines of scabs under his fur. You can't see anything but he had this before.

Nothing has changed other than his surroundings. He's on thoroughbred shavings which he was on before, he's on haylage which he was on before :/

I don't know what it could be. They aren't round so don't think could be ring worm, can't see it being rain rot/ scald as he's always well rugged up. He's been on this week coz of the snow. Don't know what it could be... Baffling me x
 
It's everywhere other than on his legs, neck and face so could be that, he hasn't had it all summer when I left the yard, just seems strange how it's come back within weeks of being back :/
 
Is the yard move also coincident with rugging (you said he was away for the summer that's what made me think this)? If so he could be too warm and its related to being rugged and nowt to do with yard? :)
 
No the yard I was on in between he was out with no rug on during summer months and no itching then in 24/7 (no winter turnout) rugged up with no itching or scabs. He had the same symptoms before, scabs on skin, scratching sides, no hair loss etc though literally just those 2 symptoms then the minute I moved he stopped. He's on different bedding, different feed than what he was on when he did it before the only thing that's the same is the haylage and the surroundings. :/
 
I'm going have the vet out I think find out if he's allergic to the something in the haylage... Maybe aspectos roof? I don't know what it could be... At my wits end! X
 
What marydoll said. That's what we think happened to my chap when he had the same, he was warming up too much during the day but no sweat when he came in as he'd cooled off again. We had a choice of that, or an alfalfa allergy. Either way my lad is rugged a lot less and doesn't eat alfalfa and seems ok now! I used microtek gel on the bumps to help the itching.
 
Does the yard keep loads of chickens ? I am not sure that red mite affects horses but they certainly bite people !

Red mite can live on wooden surfaces.
 
People often get confused by rain scald. They tend to think it's caused by purely being out in the rain with no rug on, when in actual fact it is mainly caused by the skin becoming damp and not being able to 'breathe' properly. Often when a horse is over rugged and sweating underneath a turnout which isn't breathable, or if somebody puts a rug on a wet horse repeatedly, rain scald will develop.

That being said, if your horse is very itchy, I would think it could be something else, ie mites or an allergy of some sort, as rain scald IME doesn't tend to cause itching to any degree.

I would give my vet a ring if that was me and describe the situ and see what they suggest.:)

Rang the vet n he agreed. Got a weeks worth of anti biotics, advised me to clip and keep him cool, and put lister one on the sores?! Also prescribed switch to treat mites to eradicate that problem,
