Hello, my mare came in tonight and I noticed she was try to itch her side quite a bit ( three times, not normal ) so took her rug off to change and had a look and found a few scabs. Mare was loving me touching them !!
Pulled them off and purple spayed where they were.
Gave her a proper check over to see if any more and found a couple on other side.

On her belly I found a patch about 3in long and about 1.5in wide that she had been chewing! Looked sore but she didnt mind me touching it, so cut hair off around it and have purple spayed that too.

She is the sort of horse who over reacts to any thing so very strange that she wasn't bothered about me touching it.
She is normal in every other way.

Have spayed with purple spay as she hates the taste of it, she tried to have a bible after as was not impressed so think she wont try again.

Any ideas ???

Thanks.

a few of my horses had the same problem. got vet out who said she has seen quite a few horses like this, this year. she adviced me to clip the horses out and shampoo with malaceb which i have done and horses skins have improved. if they didn't improve the were to get skin scrapings etc

Shes not been rugged up too warm has she? My other thoughts were ringworm as we had a horse who had this and she was itchy and she had scabs where she itched. Ask your vet to take a look. When they came to our horse he took some scrapings to confirm it was ringworm but we treated it as though she did have the condition, she did!!

Only been in her lightweight so far. Def not to warm.
My only other thought was 8 days ago she had an unexplained colic. Turned up to find her twitching and very sweaty. Vet arrived and within mins of giving her two jabs she was fine.
Could it be a reaction to the sweat ?
