Is this the legend about "plaits" in the manes? As far as I know, the police have no reported thefts in these circumstances.

yes thats what we have heard and right near where we are....apparently they use some sort of markings nearby the horses like twigs etc?? Just worried about little Ron as he and the others are in a field across the road from the main yard but is all padlocked...

Hopefully its nothing...

apparently the Birling one had a plastic bag tied to the gate and its mane had a plait.
the Ryarsh ones apparently had the underside of their manes cut and thieves had sedated them.

I say apparantly as i dont know this first hand, im reading it off forums.

a couple of our horses in east malling had what looked like tail cutting - quite a straight line about 3/4 of the way up - but we do have section of wire in our field so we have tried to keep an open mind as the horses in question were 25 yo carthorse type and a warmblood who can be quite spooky so would think it unlikely that he would let strangers near him. Anyway nearly two weeks on the horses are still here

Smells like a male cow has deposited via his derrier...

There is no evidence at ALL of "tagging" being a bona fida method used by horse thieves.

However.

If the owner suspects the horse was sedated, they have to get the vet out NOW. Thieves are unlikely to get the dose right, and if it's a scam (which it probably is!) it means the poor critter is seriously ill!

no but we have had bedding and hay stolen and theives tried to break into our tack room before the door scared them off, they have attempted to steal diesel from my lorry but breaking the locking fuel cap
