Righty - what dates did everyone use for the first scan to confirm pregnancy in their mare - ie how many days after covering?

Does anyone leave it longer? Ie wait to see if they don't come back into season then scan?

I'm sure thats what they did back when Asti was concieved, though this was 15 years ago... Saying that apparently Byter was done at about 40 days.

Are there pros and cons to particular dates?
 
At 15 days you can nip out a twin if there is one.

I like that stallion and think it will compliment your mare......hopefully you might even get some spots.

You can scan as early as 12 days post ovulation but if mare dual ovulated 24 hrs apart it would be too early to pick up the possible second pregnancy.
If you leave it past 25 days and scan and have twins not only are you likely to lose both embryos but you will also affect your mares hormones re getting her back in foal.
Ideally somewhere between 14 and at the latest 18 days post ovulation.
At around 16 days the embyo attaches itself to the uterine wall so the earlier the better around these dates.
Easier to pinch twins at this time as still mobile if laying next to each other so more chance of success pinching one out.
 
Right. Now have I got this bit right (I can't believe how easy the first one was, I never paid any attention to the details!!)

Oestrus is generally 5 days, dioestrus 15 days so an overall cycle of around 20 days? And ovulation occurs approx 12 hours before the end of day 5 of oestrus?

Please correct me if I'm wrong - this was from A-Z of horses health (had my nose buried in it yesterday..)

Also do most try to cover twice in the 5 days at least?

She also gets a little stressy when she sees her travel boots, so what sort of timescale is best to bring her home, is there a afer period? She travels well but gets the squits a wee bit when she knows she's going somewhere...

There is a look in his eye just like hers, and from a side, if he was chestnut, they are VERY alike!

I'm hoping any foal would have a bit more of his bone as she's only got 7"!!! And they both have big front ends though Asti has a more powerful behind. (The face of a lady and the ass of a cook!)

Hopefully going to see him in action at an event soon, though the owner has said I can pop over anytime to see him ridden and lunged to get a good idea.

But as I said, its his nature that won me over, as well as his presence. We stood there for ages faffing with him, giving him lots of strokes/pats and attention and he was loving it, other than the odd nibble and "I'm going to grab your coat" moments - but nothing malicious, he was fab. Very playful but no nastiness at all.

I think its like you with that pally - I'd not considered a spotty, and wouldn't say they'd be my favourite at all, but he's won me over despite that - I think you'd like him if you saw him in reality.

Plus the foals we saw, maybe not even yearlings, were so relaxed and friendly, the black one we saw, Lily, was so swet I'd have taken her home! She had a blanket of black spots on white over her quarters... very striking!

Did you manage to find anything notable about Negative Nugget, his sire?

But anyway, a ginger would be fine for me, any spots would be a bonus.

Couldn't find anything on the dam side though although I only used allbreeds. I'm sure there must be more about her elsewhere.
 
If you PM Go4Broke she is very up on Appaloosa lines and may be of help to you. I only recognised some of the horses from waaaay back in his pedigree but the ones in recent times mean nothing to me, sorry.
 
you scan 15 days after covering (that's if the mare hasn't come into season before hand) this is to check that the mare is in foal and that there are no twins.

You then can scan at 21 days to check for a heart beat!

Then you can scan at 32 days to check everything is ok and than the mare can usually leave the stud.
