So I have my MRI report for my cob in my grubby mitt and typically I suppose I don't understand enough of it to have a clue what the bottom line is! Call has been placed to vet but I'm sitting here scaring myself silly looking up all the terminology in the report waiting for him to call back!

In a nutshell it seems we have damage to both collateral ligaments of the DIP joint in bith front feet, damage at the site of insertion of the ligament onto the distal phalanx and changes affecting the margin of the distal phalanx along with mild navicular bone damage in both feet.

Whilst I understand where all these things are I haven't got a clue what the bottom line is for this diagnosis. I know I've got to wait for the vet but now I'm stressing out over it all. They mention strain injury too and my horse hasn't ever really done more than minimal schooling and light hacking

Any supportive words or experiences much appreciated as I think I'm going to be heading for the wine cooler soon.

If you cant get your vet on the phone, was the scan done at another establishment where you could phone and speak to the person treating the horse there ?
Sorry havent had any dealings along this type of result so wouldnt want to comment (((((( hugs )))))) i know youre stressing, i hope you hear soon

First, hugs! Scary being left with a report and no-one to tell you to ignore how frightening it seems.

OH mare had some of the same probs you are describing, hers was down to v slight medial lateral imbalance infront with the damage building up over several years. Could that be a possibility for yours? Def not the end at all! We took shoes off as unfortunatly a human simply couldn't get it right enough (and our farrier really is fab), but unless you have x-ray and MRI specs and fit new shoes everyday to keep up with changing foot growth and wear then it simply is impossible to ensure perfect balance at all times. Some horses seem to manage fine, she isn't one of them so we needed to change things. She is now barefoot and doesn't tollerate trims well. It has been a long journey, but she is doing v well now, better than before tbh!

Try not to have a total worry, do let us know how things go!

Thanks Marydoll, yes it was done at another vet hospital but the letter in with report says not to call them but to wait for your vet so they've already told me not to call them :(

Just got to wait, but waiting is so hard!

I think this is the cob that came back to you in a mess, it sounds consistent with this, foot imbalance can cause these changes and it will take time but should be able to be corrected with care.

Thank you for the kind words. I've no idea, thought we were looking at a worst case scenario of navicular but hearing about collateral ligaments isn't helping my calm thoughts!

I will definitely post more once I know! Thanks for the support.

Thanks BP, loving your screen name at this moment in time. Yes it is my cob who came back in a bit of a mess. Just hoping that we can get set on the right treatment program if there is one asap. Will do whatever it takes to keep him happy and comfortable even if not sound to ride.

Aw thats a shame and not very helpful of them, when my girly was at DICK VET SCHOOL even though discharged they said to call if i needed to know anything or have anything clarified.

They will hopefully have discussed the scan with your vet and he will want to speak to you about where you go now regarding treatment, it would probably just confuse things if you speak to everyone involved, make a list while you wait so you can get it clear and go through all you need to when your vet phones you back.

Be positive:D

Well now I'm even more stressed. No call from vet and office now closed so I can't get anything until tomorrow! Am really really angry and upset now!

*heads off to find very large bottle of wine to drown sorrows :(

Try not to stress, you might get a call this evening. I've had vets call me at 7,8,9pm at night. Fingers crossed they do as it would be really unprofessional if they "forgot" and don't get back to you as promised.

I have no advice or experiences of this but I'd be upset too if I hadn't had a call from the vet to explain something I didn't understand. Hope you find out soon.

Oh god ! Sorry, I have one thing to say

DONT GOOGLE IT !!!

It's not going to change anything finding out now or tomorrow the diagnosis will still be the same :-(

Drink wine ... maybe cry and take notes tomorrow when they call

........then you can google it !

( I sobbed like a baby just at the vet telling me they want to test my mare for cushings last week )

I hope everything is ok for you x

Thanks everyone. Ladylina I can't help but Google it, been stuck indoors all day because hubby's car broke so he took mine to work. What else could I do? Not that it matters most of it made little or no sense anyway!

I really, really hope he calls. Have not slept properly since Saturday night worrying about scan on Monday and then waiting for results. I know they're busy and all but waiting like this is horrible. :(

Echo this, at my practice the vets all check x rays and scans together in the evening to make sure a few sets of eyes look at them, they may call you yet.

Just found out from someone else that vet's waiting to confirm something with the other clinic. So nice that he told me that! I'm so angry! Since when are vets supposed to discuss your horse with other people and leave you in the dark???? Absolutely furious and have no other way to let off steam at the mo so sorry people!

Don't forget the last thing a vet wants is to be wrong ! Some one could have told you yes but remember hes just taking time to get it right !

PS STOP GOOGLING x

I've stopped the googling, wasn't getting me anywhere! Maybe I'm just too sensitive about it but a two minute call to say he wanted to check something would have gone a long way today. I know he thinks I'm a difficult customer because I always question stuff I don't understand but I would've happily accepted a request to wait for more information. This is driving me crazy. This horse has been my baby for more than 10 years being ignored is torture!

Thank you though Ladylina, I am grateful for your response. xx

I know I'm the same at the moment with my girl , in the 10 years I've had her I've never seen the vet as much as the last month. It kills me seeing her uncomfortable too I just wish some one could tell me what is wrong

I think that's what makes it so hard, we have to wait for the experts and the not knowing is horrible. Think I've also just managed to upset my friend by being cross that he told her and not me.

I hope you find out what's happening with your girl soon, nothing worse than seeing them unhappy and not being able to help them.

I'm in the same place as you at the moment, we've not had the vet this much the whole 10 years its killing me to see her so uncomfortable I just wish someone could tell me what is wrong !
