Hi all,

So maiden mare 16yo, injured while competing so tried to pop her in foal, she wasn't in discomfort for her injury it just meant she could have time off. She is a successful event mare so I was going to put her in foal anyway at some point.

Had fluid, given oxytocin, scanned and AI'd with chilled semen high up on right horn. ovulated on right by the next morning. Some fluid in uterus but flushed and then given oxytocin to remove the rest. ovulated from left ovary 24 hours later too.

Scanned day 17 as not in foal.

SO.. if this lockdown relaxes at any time she is going back to stud but its quite far away so I'll get her checked for pregnancy before she goes, however is there any way I can tell now?! she looks a bit wide but then the grass is coming through so its likely to be that isn't it?

wishful thinking on my part, it would be amazing if she was 8months!

You can get a urine test, but they arent a 100%. Its called a wee foal test. I have known so many vets get it wrong and miss one, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if she was in foal.

Years ago I had one scanned not in foal along with a pic of a problem (I forget what it was but I think she needed washing out or something). Anyway, stud owner said let's cover her again, not bother with a scan but have her blood tested at 'x' days which is meant to be 95% reliable (do you know, sorry, can't remember finer details), which I did. Blood test came back as not in foal so I resumed riding her.

Thankfully in the following May I became to ill to ride so stopped, the stud owner contacted me and said if she was in foal she would be starting to bag up so have a good look at her teats, I did and they didn't look any different to me for ages but one day in June they did look a bit swollen and the next morning I got her in, she ate her brekkie, I went out a bit later to give her hay and there was a foal ??. My vet was fairly astonished as the scan photo and blood test would have pointed to not in foal, even allowing for a small margin of error on the blood test.

I had one that came up negative on a blood test. Had her checked manually later and that was negative. Took her up to our local RC end of May and someone said to me that they thought she looked in foal. This was a mare that had a big belly anyway, looked in foal when we got her but wasn't, just a very big ribcage. Anyway had my vet back out to have a feel and sure enough she was in foal, he could feel a foot. He was very embarrassed to have missed it previously. With hindsight I think the manual she had done originally was just at the wrong time, when the weight of the foal has pulled it down and it can be missed.

Thats very interesting ErinP. How many months in foal was she when the vet did the manual and missed it ?

We had 2 mares covered last year, neither scanned in foal. One mare was sent back to the stud where i loaned her from, and breeder ( lovely Janet George ) thinks she may be in foal, my other is at home and looks rounder than expected. We are keeping everything crossed, i cant get the vets out at the minute to do any checks, so its a waiting game

I think she was about 5 months.

That gives me a bit of hope then for my girl. We had her checked the other month, even the vet thought she looked in foal but did a manual check and said no. She would have been 6 months at the time. Ive been googling like a loon trying to find out what age manuals dont work and couldnt find anything !

fantastic. Congratulations.
My mare was scanned the the other day , and definitely it in foal
Oh that’s awesome, you must be thrilled! I had no idea scans and manual checks were so error prone. I was so confused that I stayed in denial until both the manual and the blood test came back which I appreciate is stupid

@Hossrider any bonus foals for you?

bugger , that was a typo ... should have said She’s definitely not in foal . We are attempting to put her daughter in foal this week . Keep everything crossed for us !
Really pleased for you ?

The basis is check semen. What was the sperm viability after insemination?
Sometimes only oxytocin it's not enought. Sometimes uterus need rinsing. It is first foal this mare? Old, virgin mares get pregnant worse.
