Izzy is having a scan on Monday, She's 40 days. Is this scan for a heartbeat?? And will she need anymore?? She was inseminated with frozen so no 1st October terms.
Yes they will scan for the blob and check for the heartbeat. If your 1st October terms i asume you are scanning now to check for live feotus as per your stud terms?
I only had my mare scanned once last year as it casues her so much stress and vet advised not to do it again. On scannign her he confirmed she was in foal and feotus was healthly. I spent the rest of the tiem hoping nothing had gone wrong.
I know most people have 2 scans done but it's all down to the individual.
So glad someone else took this decision! Although my vet has been very understanding they can't help giving the impression that they think I might be a bit irresponsible not having my mare scanned. But going on all the signs that she showed last year, and complete absence of seasons, I'm 99% confident that she IS in foal. And given that she got incredibly stressed being scanned, and even with shedloads of dope managed to kick the vet on the knee, I decided to risk going down the "no more scans" route. Of course the worry is that you can't check to see if she's carrying twins .... But like you, sammiea, I decided that on balance it was better going with the small risk than the high stress battles that were happening with scanning.
Yes a heartbeat can usually be seen from about 28-30 days as a flicker on the screen, so yours should be nice and easy to spot at 40 days! Here is a pic of my Marey's scan at 30 days, it has top spot on my mantle place as I'm sad like that
There is an external scanner that is marketed in the USA, bit like the Human ones, never seen it mentioned in the UK but I think it might be worth a try on mares that are stressed by internal scans? From what I remember its not that expensive either, I think I saw it in a Quarter Horse Journal or similar at my vets surgery.
