Had a real scare with Gali last night, first time in 12 years she has had me that worried!!!!
I came home this weekend for a night out with my friends last night. Bought the horses in as normal at about 6.30 and went out at about 8pm. I was ment to be staying out all night and crashing at the pub for the night (was out with pub owner). By 10pm the night wasn't turning out as planned and I wasn't having much fun so decided to come home. At 11.30pm I went out to check the ponies (something my parent's wouldnt have done had I not been there) and found Gali in a right state.
It was so distressing to see her. She was heavy breathing, pawing the floor, coughing to the extend her legs almost gave way ect. Watched her for 5 mins to see if it would pass but it didn't so called the emergency vet out who was here within 10 minutes. After a quick examination he came to the conclusion that her lungs were full of fluid and she was probibly having an allergic reaction to something like an asthma attack in people. He gave her a steroid injection and left after saying had she been left much longer she would have been in a right state. I stayed out in the stables all night in a sleeping bag on top of a haybale. By 2am she was much calmer and although heavy breathing she had pretty much stopped the coughing. By this morning her nostrils are still flared and she is still deep breathing but looking ok in herself with a bit of nasal discharge. I am in contact with the vet and on the instructions to keep her monitored.
I am really puzzled as to what caused it. She is on her own paddock, the hay she was on last night is the same bale she has been on for three days ect, and we haven't changed anything she comes in to contact with.
Just so glad I went to check on her last night!
