scars and showing?

wow! that beats all whisper's scars! ;) i'm only just getting into showing so cant comment of whether it will affect you or not... but just wondered if you ever put anything on the scar?

the only reason i ask is that i have found that putting zinc and caster oil cream on the scar softens it and hair soon starts to grow in. ;) what did he do? sorry im being nosey! ;) whisper was totaly accident prone so has a scar on every leg now! :rolleyes: willow has followed in her mothers footsteps and cut her foot this winter. she has a little scar now, but im putting z&c on it and it is reducing slowly but steadily!

unfortunatly hair will never grow back :( he removed all the hair folicules as he cut a flap about 1/2 inch thick off so all of that tissue there is scar tissue with no feeling in it as he de-nerved himself and went through 6 arteries bit of a suicidal horse as he then did it again on the same foot the next year :/ he was rummeging around in the under growth as they do and he put his foot in one of the squares of sheep wire panicked and took off, taking half of his foot off at the same time :/ stupid animal, nobody thought he had a chance and tbh neither did i but we perservered and hes fine and doing about his daily things in full ridden work but he has has so many injuries now that not even his tounge is insured :P haha

brings me back to the good old days covered in blood trying to patch up my stupid pba yearling!! one of her injuries was so deep she had exposed her tendons... i can still see it now. she still has a scar and that fetlock is slightly larger than the other (proud flesh) but thats all superficial so im thankful for that... and that was a LONG time ago!! :p
 
I think a few scars can be gotten away with in working hunter... but maybe not show hunter.... there are tricks of the trade. I know people who glue on bits of fake fur and things!!!!!!
 
Given that it is on the inside I very much doubt many judges will notice it to be honest. If you can find a likeness in colour of felt tip pen, paint or boot polish then you can try and blend it in with the hair to make it less obvious.

Scars don't matter as much in workers as in theory the horses are supposed to go out hunting every winter and what horse doesn't end up with one cut or another from brushing through a bush? If you and another horse are on equal points then yes, it will very much count against him but if you have the jumping to a t and the flatwork spot on then scars can be overlooked in the grand scheme of things.
 
Sorry for slight hijack but I really want to do working hunter with my boy but he has a scar on his leg from when he got it wrapped around a wire.

The back on his hock has a tiny bit of white hair and on the front is scar with no hair. Will we get marked down considerably for this, at local show level?
 
haha yeah, the vets did give us steroid creams to put on it to see if the hair would grow back and they knew it wouldnt but no harm in trying :P i was thinking i could wait until halloween time when tesco has fake mostashes and eyebrows and stick some of them on it ;)

Again just try and find something that will make it blend in and be less noticable. At local level it depends on the judge, some don't mind scars as it shows the life of a working horse others go to the opposite extreme and won't have them at all. At county level so long as the scar isn't detrimental to the horses performance or comformation then it will only really play against you when you have 2 horses of equal merit.

Saying that if your horse is a Hack type then scars are a HUGE no no, you might be ok at Riding horse and hunters generally aren't fussed as much as the other 2 sections.
 
It is the jumping element of a WH which should gain the highest % of marks compared to the ride/show and confo marks. The scar may bring the confo mark down but it is often just the clears which go through to that stage anyway. I would give it a go and have some fun.
