So..pointless but scary & just need to vent a little..so please bare with me! Been a bit of a stressful week with my mare and I've been doing 4 hourly checks round the clock..so am tired & feel like I must look like a troll..running on caffeine & suggestive biscuits(shop now out of custard creams:()

So.. I was all wrapped up to get in the car & drive to stables. About a quarter to midnight last night. I live in a cul de sac next to open fields & am the last house..so didn't put dog on lead to walk from the garden to the drive thru the gate..I don't normally in day time, but as its only street - lit up to my house & no cars were about i let him go loose to the front gate..I had his lead, hot supper for horse in bucket & my handbag, iphone, keys & coffee mug all in my hands..just as I shut the door & turned round, he went into THE most mega barking I've ever heard.

This was not like his usual reactive worried barking at new humans /his 'men' bark or his OMG 'its a miniature dachshund mummy quick save me' bark... this was deep and very very clearly different..tho still NOT agressive. my eyes adjusted and a man was just stood there facing us at the front gate about 3 meters from me.Still tall, dark clothes & hat and just stood staring.

My dog was now zebedee bouncing up & down 'shouting' at the man..and actually doing what he should do, protecting me and my property from a potentially unwelcome character.

Just to clarify he is not a guard dog & i do not encourage it in any way..he is simply acting on instinct...the man was still stood in the gateway, not moving or speaking. I mustered my breath back after the initial jump when I saw him its incredibly quiet here & I know the locals who dog walk & they all understand my boy so it wasn't any of them..oh ...and his lack of dog! I clearly & calmly but firmly said "What do you want!" (knees were feeling like runny icing at this point..heart & stomach had swapped places a bit too)

My dog was between us at all times and would usually bounce at the wall & peep over..but he kept back and close to me. The man bent down as if picking something up still keeping his eyes on us..I repeated it..twice more. I was holding onto my dogs harness at this point..the man reached forward and took his glove off & leaned towards my dog who was now actually going beserk.

Neighbour (nice old hockey stick weilding octogenarian whos wife weilds apple pies:D) called out if I was ok..& some gruff words to the man Man was still silent but kept leaning in to try to reach to my dogs head.

I Shouted "LEAVE MY DOG ALONE" "move back" and"Do NOT touch my dog". He ignored me & carried on. My dog was now really warning him , hackles up bigger than Jedward (i think mine were too by this point scared had turned to angry and I wanted to get away, into my car & get to my mare) I then told him " LEAVE NOW or I will release the dog" neighbour shouted to him to go away & police were on the way came out & stared as the man cooly just walked off into the fields direction. Neighbour hadn't yet called the police & the man technically had not done anything..my God tho I am still shaking now. The what ifs do not bare to think, but I was terrified that I wouldn't be able to hold him back with arms still full -(most was now on the path) I do not know what he was doing, what he wanted or who he was ...but i really didn't like it. What worries me the most is he is a Dog in Need of Space and although he is never aggressive in the slightest, I don't know how he would have reacted with the unwelcome stranger had he tried harder to touch/grab him or what ever he was trying to do.

Are normal people really stupid enough to try and touch a dog who is clearly going bat-poop at them because they are invading his space & property and in the dark? How do you stand if an uninvited person puts your dog in a situation? I am very lucky I managed to get hold of him and kept hold of him-plus he stayed by me, protecting me, rather than lunging at him or worse still going after him - he could easily pop the flowerbed & wall..does not bare thinking about.

Had a strange man outside the house today pulled up across my 4 spaces, infront of two of my cars. He was in a range rover with funny plates on..I heard him on the phone "I'm here" between the blue 'insert type of car" and the black "insert other car" I opened the top window & looked straight at him. he looked up..dog went bat poop thru window again..man turned, got in range rover & bounced up two curbs before speeding off like he'd stollen it. Could be completely innocently different lost person...but he was the same build & tall..I really do NOT like this..I couldn't make out the plates and didn't get a very good look at his face tho he was clean clothed in dark colours and tanned.

I'm a bit on edge as well as over tired. There could be a very rational explanation for both..but I'm not overly comfortable about either.

has anyone been in a similar 'almost-intruder situation' and where do you stand with your dogs? I shouldn't have to keep him on the lead within my property although I usually check left & right incase anyone is coming before opening the gate..worryingly the security light didn't come on either so he must have been hiding behind the wall/bushes or stood there longer than I knew..

Sorry that was long but I needed to air!:o still very shakey..tho that could be my coffee based diet since friday.. I was going to make chocolate fudge cake..but the suggestive biscuits are diminishing rapidly..still...help your selves!

You do seem to attract bad situations, you must have been a wicked person in aprevious life lol.

Your dog acted completely the right way and I would be very disappointed if my Dobes didnt act the same way.

All my Dobes over the years have always followed me out to get wood for the wood burner at night(have a wheel-barrow outside the back door) but dont see the need during the day. It is very creepy out there at night even with an outside light.

A few weeks back someone knocked on my back-door and I was greeted by a strange man who said he had taken a wrong turn and had come up through our farm-yard and noticed a Land Rover shell and was it for sale. I was furious because it is next to impossible to come up our farm track and turn round and turn up to the farm yard without reversing. I said you are very lucky 20 mins ago I was out there with my Dobes and they would not have taken kindly finding someone snooping about( they wouldnt but would probabley have backed him up against a wall and barked at him). He said forget it and walked away and as he walked by the window the dogs were raving at him.

Both my dogs have obedience certificates and I have public liability but am very aware my dogs could scare people, normal visitors ie friends and post lady are welcome with open arms. Anyone snooping about or acting strange are fair game but I know my dogs wouldnt attack unless it was to protect me.

In your situation I would have a word with your local bobby and tell him how frightened you were, would also speak to neighbours and ask if they had seen anything suspicious. It might also give you peace of mind to carry a personal alarm.

OMG how scary, can't really offer any advice but be careful - there are some right weirdos around!! Would definitely notify local police though just so they are aware! As far as your dog reacting like that I think I'd be disappointed if either of mine didn't react in a similar way, would want them to actually hurt anyone but certainly to warn them off!

I'd be annoyed if my dog hadn't reacted like that.

In terms of legalities, you might want to read up, I think the legislation regarding dogs has either recently changed or the changes are out for consultation.

PS if you are on edge, the dog will be too!!

Ring the police and let them know what has happened. If you do get a personal alarm make sure your neighbours know as they sound similar to a car alarm. Also read up on the correct use.

Definitely let the police know..if someone intrudes on your land and your dog attacks them there is nothing they can do. However..do have signs up saying dogs are on the property and not to enter. In this case your dog was protecting you. That man would have scared me to death. Always carry your keys in your hand pointing outwards so you can jab them in the face...report it though.

Ditto letting the police know and getting a personal alarm and letting your hockey stick/apple pie wielding (lol) neighbours know you've got it.

Also if you've got your mobile phone in your hand you can use it like a Yawara stick: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yawara to bop them hard on the bridge of the nose hopefully breaking it but certainly disorientating/hurting them long enough for you to get away.

Anyone who's ever been headbutted in the nose by their horse knows it makes your eyes water something fierce and it hurts! ;):D
Stay safe OP, that sounds scary!

I must have been very wicked! On the plus side tho(re bad situations!)..I am at least consistent..thats a good thing..right?:D I'm possibly contemplating turning professional nutter attracter! I am sure my boy would be the same..but I just worry about people making things up after the incident..ie barking and rushing to the gate to one person may be a 'chase' senario to another-esp if they were in the wrong (intruding or attacking)..I'm very glad there is no way anyone could claim he is a staffie/part pit bull as they get such a rough ride before anything even happens!
Please may I ask who your liability insurance is with?and roughly how much I would expect to pay for just the one dog?(guessing it is breed related). I was offered a panic button after an incident here a while ago but decided i would be brave & go without.
Will speak to the police officer again, he only lives across the fields & made some really nice suggestions about making the front of the property a little more fort knocks like...might be worth spending out for a little more secure feeling, even tho I'm selling. I've got a rape alarm and a nasty spray can..In the car also have a very nice 'guardian'.. believe they are sold as mini fire extinguishers..how would I be to know they were just smoking & didn't need putting out (obviously I didn't mean pegging them with it if the jet didn't work:rolleyes:)might keep that inside the front door from now on

Good to know..I will look up, thank you..I hope the changes are not detrimental to genuine dogs in a compromised owner safety position..that would be dreadful..

Not so much on edge as half way up the apple tree on the front lawn!(luckily dog and I missed the pond while we were jumping up & down barking at scary weirdo)...all happened so quick tho it was very hard to take in as was such a surprise. I am surprised tho that he hadn't hard him before we opened the front door..when i have my hho curry eves,he knows when someone has driven within 50 meters of the end of the lane let alone thinking of coming indoors!:D

That sounds awful!

I agree with the poster who said ring the police. Definitely ring the non-emergency number and let them know.
thank you , I will.Have made notes etc of all the weird things that have gone on..
I love your signiature pics..esp the one hiding his nose under his tongue!

Thank you..dear old neighbour already tackled a burglar here (dog & I were out a horses) Thanks to him the guy was caught and i was fully refunded every penny of the stolen goods when it went to court..and he paid up! (was prob scared of neighbour!)

It did me too..being tired to point of exhaustion already & dosed up on coffee just heightened the involuntary holding breath moments! I dug out my kubotan keyring today..not only great as self defense but for when you drop car keys in long grass!

thank you..esp for the link! and yes..been face butted downward & upwards and horse caught me straight in the nose..he is a tall greedy lummox who was trying to inhale the whole haylage net thru one whole...over my head.he pulled down & in and smacked me upwards straight in the face with his chin..I couldn't see right for about half an hour after the tears & blood stopped! Yawara would be a lovely name for a horse..but on second thoughts..

The changes in the law will I think make owners liable for attacks even if the dog is on your own property. However burglars etc will be excluded from being protected. The problem is if the dog attacks and therefore the burglary is averted -even tho they fully intended to burgle or attack you.....:-((( they get £0000s of compo:-((((

Good that they are trying to make owners more responsible..but dreadful news on the other hand..This is sooooo wrong..especially as I can see it has the potential to be abused. As usual it will likely adversely affect innocent good owners & genuine dogs and the scum who use dogs for fighting or as threats will likely be untouched..and are we going to see a rise in provoked dog attacks if a burglary goes wrong?ie faced with being caught & put away for robbery..make the most of the situation & get thousands?Innocent dogs will be at risk yet again...time to goat proof the front garden & get them on patrol & a couple of geese!

Phone police.

Dex would have been the same in this situation- unless of course said man produced a sausage!!

My Mac is now coffee flavoured!:D

..depending on which 'variety'of sausage of course..or we get into dodgy ground..

"man held hostage by dog,who proceeded to drag & bury man in back garden for later!"

Not sure if my boy would do a Dex or not as he doesn't always trust our new HHO meet up people at first..if he thought we had jobs to do, he would more than definitely put man & sausage somewhere safe!:D

I'd be extra scared if said man produced a sausage :D

Seriously though OP - be careful, report to the police and don't take any risks - it sounds well dodgy. Especially with the second incident as well!

Perhaps i should keep a sausage in my pocket for self defense..could you imagine that...potential burglar/weirdo reporting me to the police for er... flashing at him!!! We joke.. but I know i could hide the evidence and then they would lock up scary man for a long time for making up stories about girls with 'sausages'!

I'm going to have a word with the neighbourhood bobby -because of all the elderly people who live off my lane next to the open fields by my house, they often drive up & turn around a few times..so will be worth the mention..frequently its a lady pc & she has more than a couple of dogs, which makes it a lot easier as she is very understanding about them...have logged everything & neighbour with apple pie weilding wife saw the range rover too & got his number..I'm so glad he's a hardcore curtain twitcher..nothing gets past him!

I know it is serious, but the picture of your neighbour has made me laugh!

We live quite isolated, which I love, but we do get people coming up drive because sat nav brings everyone looking for our post code to our drive, even through the 8 properties with same code are spread out over half a mile. I really do not like answering door to lost people at night in dark. Dog goes mad and have to hang on to him and hope I am strong enoough to do so, but do not like to open door without him.

Having said that have also rescued lost girl with MH problems and kept her safe till we found family, so it is not always obvious what people want.

I think a word with your neighbourhood PC is a good idea, and well done to your neighbour for getting number plate!

Glad you're getting in touch with local bobby and really glad your neighbour got the number plate down! Keep us updated SaharahS and stay safe!

Any news?

Honestly, your greatest defence is distance. Don't let anyone with a bad vibe get within ten feet of you. Hitting them with a mobile phone or car keys isn't going to help if they mean you serious harm.

Who is to say he meant any harm ? Maybe spooked the OP but he sounds like he was standing on a street which is hardly a crime and to look at it another way maybe he was spooked also by her demanding to know what he was doing and letting her dog try and attack him ....I don't know obviously but he doesn't sound like he did anything wrong other than being out at midnight.....

you stick the car key into their face, obviously not being close to them in the first place is ideal, but anyone involved with self-defence will also tell you to do something which shocks the attacker and attacking them back will certainly do that..even just to give yourself enough time to get away. Also scream loud, don't go into victim mode, create merry hell.

I know. It's also a great way to break your hand.

The point I was making was not to let them get close enough to grab you. Plus the OP had a much better 'weapon' than a set of car keys- she had a big dog.

Well yes in an ideal world distance would be best but if someone gets stuck in at close quarters you're going to do whatever you can to get away so I'd kick/bite/scratch/poke them with keys/hit them with mobiles/sing a merry tune if I thought it would help ;)
