Scary moment. Chip tried to kill Charley. Warning.

I would have taken a photo as well, knowing someone else was there and doing the best they could to chase the bully.

Sorry for poor little one, and sorry about Chip

I am nowhere near as experienced with horses and 'herds' as you are Enfys, but one thing I have learnt is that when there are mares around, horses will behave 'out of character'. My own horse has been in the same small herd of geldings all winter very happily, with no hint of bickering at all. Then they moved them to a field next to a small herd of mares, and they have turned on one another and established a very severe pecking order which they never did before. There have been bites and kicks, which have actually shocked me.

So I would think carefully before you part with Chip. I believe that most horses are to a certain extent ruled by instinct and hormones if there are mares around.

Shocking photo, though, poor little Charlie

I can only put babies out with my big lad, anything else he will kill and i'm not exaggerating!

I've never seen anything like that, I didn't think horses were aggressive . Am glad he's not mine

I think you are being too harsh on Chip

This little one snuck into his territory and he was just putting him in his place.

One of mine, which is the sweetest most laid back horse, who loves his brother and happily goes out with most horses, attacked another horse. This one tried to jump into his field got it wrong ended up on the floor half stuck in the gate. So my horse went up and kicked and bit him when he was on the floor.

If they had been introduced properly and without other company they would have probably been fine.

I don't. I agree most horses would investigate a newcomer and nuzzle / push them but wrestle them to the floor ??

Depends how they feel about life, my horse thinks invaders, be it bovine, equine or ovine should all be chased and bitten.

If introduced on neutral ground he is ok with the equines, but still hates cows with a passion!

Having got over my initial rage, of course I understand that Chip's reaction was logical, to him, but, I am still slightly worried about the absolute ferocity of it. A 12 y.o grown horse IS over reacting taking on a submissive yearling, colt or not, that could walk underneath him.

This wasn't just an ears back "Get out of here or I will bite your bum" warning. One minute Chip was calm as you like, the next he was roaring, ears flat, teeth bared and I have no doubt that he intended to do serious damage, this was more than a normal pecking order situation.

If Chip wasn't such a sweet character, and a good riding horse for my daughter he'd have gone by now.

Ah well, all done and dusted now. No more geldings.

Cut The little ones nuts off! If your not breeding from him I think it's cruel to keep them entire anyway!?

You did understand it was the gelding who attacked the mini colt? How would it solve Enfys worry about Chip the gelding maybe doing it again and perhaps this time with her daughter on his back, to have Charlie the mini colt gelded?

Enfys, I'm not a horse expert, but if Chip has never acted like this before, I would not worry to much about it happening with your daughter on his back, hopefully it was something that happened then and there but will not happen elsewhere if you understand me.

Yes but the reason the GELDING attacked the COLT is because it was protecting the mares or just his territory. If the COLT was gelded he may not feel threatened, and if every other horse feels the same I'd say it is the colt that needs to be gelded or moved on.

You are entitled to think what you like of course, just as I am.

Oh crap, it isn't cruel, how do you work that one out? I have my reasons for NOT cutting the colts nuts off yet, he is only a yearling, I am sure that there are plenty of people who have uncut yearlings besides me.

For now Chip is still here, future is in the balance because he has been diagnosed with a condition that may not be manageable where I live, or indeed. Waiting for prognosis now.
