My horse ran off with me in the school this morning! Was the closest to bolting I remember being, we went twice round the school at a flat out gallop before I managed to stop him. I was terrified that he was either going to fall over on the corners or jump the fence. I was so scared I couldn't get off because I thought he was going to do it again with me half off and when my lovely YM and a fellow livery managed to get me off I collapsed on my YM howling and sobbing with relief. Might sound like a massive over reaction but I got bolted with by my previous horse 2 years ago and it resulted in a near fatal accident, I don't remember it but this morning obviously triggered something.

Not sure what made him do it he went to go into canter without me asking (anticipating because I changed my diagonal in a corner) and when I went to bring him back he sped up and then because I tensed went into a blind gallop. He may have been spooked as this is really not like him he is normally a good boy in the school. One of my YMs got on him and he was really rattled but then calmed down so she walked and trotted then I got back on (after some sweet tea) and he was fine until I cantered then he went to shoot off again but because I sat back and relaxed he settled down and was better the second time. My YM said he looked like he was really excited going into canter like let's go so maybe he is just full of it! We have back lady coming next week so I will get her to check him just in case. We had a show jumping lesson at a different yard yesterday and he was perfect!

Not really looking for advice just wanted to share with people who might understand.

Ugh, I've had that happen and we only stopped when I came off :( It's very hard to relax, even if you know that's why they're panicking! Well done for stopping, and for getting back on! No wonder you were shaken.

mine did this when he had a bad back. although it could just be the warmer weather and grass growing thats wound him up.
Has he been kept in much with the bad weather and therefore just a bit fresh??

Thanks for replies and thank you Floxie for your kind words. He has been kept in for a maximum of 2 days and that was over a week ago, he even had a couple of hours turnout before we went for our lesson yesterday, he is not really the sort who gets wound up by staying in. He is quite a nervous horse but the most he usually does when spooked is jump in the air. I actually had the vet on Friday as I was concerned his eye sight might not be quite right and he does have a couple of blind spots in his right eye but they are only about a millimetre in size and obviously were there before today! He was a bit excited when we started our schooling session but he had totally settled by this point which was about 30 minutes in! Very strange but I will get all the checks done just in case.

YorksG I did wonder that too although apparently he didn't look sore but it was the most and (one jump) the highest we've jumped in a little while. Will give him tomorrow off and go for a hack on wednesday and see how he feels.

This has happened to me several times too :( and because I don't have the best balance (I'm dyspraxic) I'm sure I make it worse. Sometimes it's just one of those things and never happens again, or you never work out why it happened, but it really can shake you up. :(
