I take my hat off (not literlly!), to all you brave souls who have to ride on the road.

Herbie is staying at a yard off the forest and the riding is country lanes and single track. I put on my specially purchased "please pass wide and slow bib" and set out on my firt road ride in about 15years

. I had a friend to follow as Herbs is only a baby and has not really done road work. He was fab and passed everything including the big bus and air brakes we met on the single track so the bus had to pull over in the just long enough pull in and we passed so close I could have touched the passengers. Plus consruction lorries and was a total star.

I have to say though I still find it more terrifying than pretty much anthing else and it has reminded my how lucky I am to have no roadwork at my normal yard.

Try doing it in the dark in the morning before work then with flashing lights and endless hi-viz on. It's the only way I get to ride during the week but it's not for the faint hearted!!!

God can't believe you'd ride in the dark. I don't think it's worth the risk (i don't think a driver would expect to come across at horse in the dark). I have to make do with weekend hacking only til the evenings get lighter.

Weekend only hacks for me too. Try hacking out a pony who's very brave except if its abything bigger than a van!! Great fun when the bus comes round the corner, or the bin lorry for that matter. I'm sure they turn around when they see us!!! Silly psyco pony (You'd think she'd have grown out of it by now, she's 21 but been scared since she was ickle!)

Ride out on the road pretty much every time out, the idea of doing that in the dark is vert frightening. We have ridden out early mornings with hi-viz and flashing lights, but not till it was light.
