scary - showing gone wrong!

oh good god!! what chaos poor bloody horses
frown.gif

my god that was really bad....

Total lack of for thought on the organisers part, and it seams no procedure in place when it all goes wrong.

Thats what I thought...... just alot of men waving their arms.... not entirely sure what else they could of done tho!

Unbelievable carnage. I have to admit to some shocked laughing seeing them all go down like skittles and I hope the first one that caused it had the bullet; nasty piece of work that; at least the others did it because they were frightened.

There was a thread about this a while back. From what I recall
- the video is quite old and all horses/riders recovered
- one of the ladies who didn't get out when it all went wrong was prevented doing so by disability
- nearly everyone said those not (initially) involved should have got out and unhitched their horses asap if they couldn't leave the arena
- the organisers should have (and this is where opinion divided) either left gates shut and let horse run itself out with others either stationary in centre or walking slowy around
OR
- got everyone else out of the arena and let loose horse(s) run it/themsleves out
- very few people thought that loose horses should be chased/lassooed/tripped

I'm sure there are some driving experts on here who can clarify!

OMG! (a) why didnt they get the rest of the horse out of they ring? (b) why were the owners still sitting in their buggies like sitting duck!? absolute carnage!

Seen this before and it doesn't make any better viewing second time round - only a bunch of stupid idiots set about screaming and yelling when there are scared horses about.

Good to see inbreeding still goes on.

Dear lord, what a terrible thing to happen.

I think due to the blinkers as well, wouldn't of helped when trying to catch the horse. I was thinking while watching it well why didnt they do this an why didn't they do that, but it's all too easy criticise on how they handled the situation when watching the vid but no doubt at the time, they just did what ever they thought was best at the time.

So long as they have a action plan should it very happen again.

i do hope they diddnt just shoot the first horse!
we did not see what caused that reaction, driver error, fear of something in the audience, harness moved causing pain there are so many things that cause that sort of reaction do we expect any other horse to be shot if it panics?
the noise & vibration when the carriage clipped the side would have sent it into sheer panic.

i am only dissapointed that when the second had been spooked that they did not unhitch them all from the shafts & remove driving reins so if they did get spooked the danger was lessoned.

i do hope they were all ok in the end.

Oh for goodness sake, give it a break. Are you all so flipping perfect yourselves?

Carnage yes, it happens. Just why should that first horse have got the bullet? It scared itself and reacted accordingly, nothing more, nothing less.

It is all very well and good to sit there and criticise from the other side of the screen, we all do it, it is human nature, but people don't always react in quite the way they wish they had in hindsight. While you are polishing your collective halos think, has nobody who slagged these people down, EVER done something that they wished they'd done differently looking back on it? I know I have.

What the hell has inbreeding got to do with it? If you searched I am sure you could find similar happenings in the good old UK too.

Just bad luck and spur of the moment indecision, that's all.

Many of the 800+ comments after this clip go along condemnatory lines .

Oh to be so perfect.

I am the queen of running about like a headless chicken in the face of an emergency, so I, for one, don't have a clue how I would react in that situation. I KNOW what the sensible things to do would be, but whether I would do them in the heat of the moment is another thing.

I'm not perfect but I know not to scream and run around when horses are concerned. I think even the 12 year olds on my yard know better...

Guess we must be all super human then or have a modicum of sense...

I thought the woman on the mike did a pretty good job of staying calm and trying to control the procedings. Her advice to keep the horse on the rail and let him run himself out seem sounds especially after someone got trampled trying to catch him.

Unfortunately with blinkers on, it is hard to keep the horse on the rail as he can't see you.

Likewise with unhitching the rest of the horses - I'm not sure I would think that messing around with the traces and backing carts off horses would be my first choice of behaviour if I had a loose terrified horse racing around me. I think I might have got out of the carriage though and gone round to the front to hold my horse...

Horrible accident - hope all the horses were ok in the end and the people of course.

Like many people on here, I couldn't really understand why they didn't take the other horses out of the arena as soon as the trouble started. I know it's difficult to think straight in an emergency, but it just seems like common sense to me. It really gave me a fright when that man got mowed down while he was trying to stop the horse - it was very brave of him to jump in front of it like that (if a little daft), I hope he was okay! I hope the horse at the end was alright too. Poor animals, it must have been terrifying for them with the carts and harnesses "chasing" them around - no wonder they just got more and more wound up once they'd started running.

Since I know I'm not the only one that sometimes reading FuglyHorseOfTheDay's blog on HHO, it could have another HHO:er on here posting about having seen it there, because Fugly wrote about this on Friday, March 27, 2009 http://fuglyhorseoftheday.blogspot.com/2009/03/to-show-or-not-to-show.html , I've copied the link to the page where you can read the comments she got that day if you scroll down (all 259 of them).

The reason we all have a 'groom' in Uk driving classes is so that there is a second pair of hands to help in an emergency. I used to be an able-bodied whip for Driving for the Disabled(now called something different) we had training sessions for how to deal with emergencies.

This included use of quick release trace clips and dealing with a downed horse. I saw this film a few weeks ago and my biggest criticism was of the screaming crowd who should have been told to shut up or beat it.

I don't think the first horse deserved the 'bullet', it was either frightened or not properly prepared for a driving class kicking out like that. It is not the horse's fault it is frightened but the owner/driver.
