Yesterday one of the mares on the yard I work at came in from the field in a bit of a state, she had a nasty arterial bleed from under her cheek. We had gone through a whole pack of gauze and a t-shirt by the time the vet arrived. The mare had lost an awful amount of blood and she became quite dopey. Sadly the vet was unable to find the end of the artery to tie it off, but by this time she had quite a lump on her face which was a mass of clotted blood, which had stopped the bleed. She isn't out of the woods yet though, she's at risk from further bleeding and infection. Vet is back out tomorrow to see her. I must of been surging with adrenaline because it wasn't until 4 hours later when I sat down that I started to shake a wee bit and got a bit upset. Anyone else had a simalar situation? Sorry for the long post, and I'll keep you posted on the mare.

Oh gosh that sounds awful!

Haven't been in that situation before, but have a (((hug))))

Not horsey but OH and I were first on the scene at a RTA.
We were joining the A1 off a slip road and a car on the main carriageway was hit by another. Said car somersaulted 3 times before stopping. The force of the impact tore the roof off.
We, with the help of a few others, did the first aid bit and waited for the ambulance to arrive.
It wasn't till the following morning that I felt really sick. I had to take the day of work as I was so jittery.

Yes I was there with my yearling who in the end had to go to hospital. Didn't get home till midnight, shock hit the days after. Adrenaline keeps you going when you have to get on and deal with it, when panicking isn't an option.
