Hi Guys - I'm looking at ordering in a pallet of shavings. Has anyone any experience of using the scented ones like lavender or eucalyptus? Do they actually smell nice or has it reverted to the norm by day 2 lol. Just wondering if it is worth the extra. Neither are bed eaters so this isn't an issue.

Thanks

I really don't think my boys have a preference on bedding smells 🤣 as long as it's a big, clean, deep bed they are happy!

I’m sure it’s not a thing but having had a horse that broke out into hives at the nearest thing that could cause an allergic reaction I’d steer clear
That is a very good point. Chester is very sensitive, and although he has never had a reaction to lavender... it's a bittering agent so not sure what is really in it!

The horse had to have skin scrapes taken by the vet and the vet rang me and said the horse was basically allergic to life 🤣.
The most common allergen was dust but anything with fragrance- fly sprays, coat sprays was another thing.
This was before dust sheets/neck covers. So he had to be in a cotton sheet all the time and a DIY cotton neck cover was made by a kind lady in the WI.

Luckily he isn't that bad lol. Be he does love a random attack of hives... generally timed well with a comp or other stay away that's planned!

Mine like theirs to smell of pee. It's always the first thing they do when they get a squeaky clean bed, have a giant wee in it. I think if they had scented they would be very mistrustful of it all!
Don't you just love it when they do that!!! No appreciation at all 🤣

It’s unlikely to be pure essential oil of lavender used anyway, and more likely the synthetic version, which I’d definitely steer clear of, due to higher risk of allergy.

My mare can be skin sensitive, and even a popular mud-away spray caused hives. Because most of these sprays contain a cocktail of synthetic chemical ingredients it’s hard to know specifically what causes the reaction.

I have the lavendar Raviera bedding as i was concerned that it would be eaten by the truffle pig pony we have and the lavender is a bitterant. It does smell a couple of days later still but its not over whelming scent wise. I now prefer it to normal bedding.

This is what I was looking at, thanks

Lavender is a calmer so would send mine to sleep.
Think it's a marketing gimmick. Nothing nicer than the smell of horse poo imo. 💩
It's not the poo by Ray's super strength wee 🤣

What about using a different type of bedding? I find that where pellets are so much more absorbent you don't really get the smell of wee. I'd be a bit wary of introducing unnatural smells and any additional chemicals that weren't completely necessary.

My old horse had sweet itch and I can remember getting some myscanthus bedding which smelt of Citronella, to keep the flies & midges off him.

It smelt absolutely gorgeous (I thought so anyway) and I really hope it did keep some of the flying pests off my poor old lad.

Sorry can't remember who produced it - it was over 8yrs ago now.

Can you get a bale to try first? Bed down bedding do various “scents” and sell smaller 10kg trial bags before you order a pallet. I tried the excel bedding which is slightly lemon scented, it was quite nice to be honest 🤣 I didn’t get it though as I prefer the burly bed miscanthus I’m using now x

Miscanthus is amazing! Makes a lovely firm bed that doesn’t move, feels like a mattress! More absorbent than shavings too!

I've not heard of scented shavings but I have used the scented Miscanthus. The Citronella and the Eucalyptus were pleasant and felt like it was freshening up the bed when it went in. The lavender I didn't particularly take to, it smelt not so great and wasn't nice for some reason. Older one has decided he likes Bedmax now so I'm quite happy with the lovely smell of Pine when I put a bale down! Youngster can have the plain Miscanthus as I'm sure he's not too fussed.
