We met a loooovely Schnauzer today on a walk, and it got me thinking (bad sign)... we have the lovely Beastie on here but does anyone else have any experiences with Schnauzers? I'm intrigued by the different sizes - in my head they all act the same but on different scales :o is that fair or am I just off my head?

All stories welcome (not that we're planning a new addition...yet :p)

I have mini and standard Schnauzers at the ringcraft that I go to. I have found that the mini's are very yappy and a bit sharper with other dogs than the standard size. Can't comment on the Giant's as have never really had any regular contact with any.

My parent's have owned each, started with a mini, then a giant and now a standard.

The mini was probably the better behaved, the giant was aggressive (it scruffed my Westie and she required many, many stitches). The standard they have now is intelligent, loyal and at not yet 2, still a little bonkers.

My preference would be the standard, as not keen on smaller dogs and the Giant was just too big.

Thank you both! :) I just find it quite interesting that there is three different sizes of the same breed, apart from poodles I can't really think of another breed that is the same (until silly o'clock tonight when inspiration shall strike)

Basi - welcome to the forum! Is that a basenji in your avatar? :)

Quirky - I'm usually a no-go on smaller dogs too, but a couple I've met recently are converting me :o

Yes it is a Basenji:)

Thank you for the welcome:)

I can't off the top of my head think of another breed that has 3 different sizes either, well not in the UK anyway.

If I had to choose one size of Schnauzer, I would probably choose a standard. I'm not mad keen on giants - the ones I have met/groomend were just a little too much dog for me. Don't get me wrong, I like big dogs, but I like large but laid back dogs. Having said that, mini's to me are the most beautiful of the lot-- have been bred over the years to have much more profuse coat and being a groomer, I quite like that ;) . But the standards are a nice size, a little more laid back and less yappy. That and I'd happily handstrip a standard, but I hate stripping minis!

I can't think (again, other than poodles) of a breed that has three sizes. Two sizes yes...(eg dachshunds, spitz, munsterlander - I wonder if pinschers count with mini, german, and dobermann?)

I have known some owners with Miniature Schnauzers (one of them had 4) and not one of those Miniatures was yappy, but they were all treated as working dogs in miniature size and most of them competed in obedience etc.
They've seemed slightly more energetic than the Standards that I've met and none of them had issues with having their teeth looked at by strangers, but I've met more than one Standard that have had issues with that. (All puppy classes I've taken have had that in their training, which means that all puppy owners takes turns with pretending to be dog judges or veterinarians, that wants to look at your puppy's teeth.)
I've only met Giant Schnauzers on dog shows.

Off topic but as far as breeds with different sizes, I can think of these:

Basset Griffon Vendéen = Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen.

Bull Terrier and Miniature Bull Terrier.

Dachshund = Standard Dachshund, Miniature Dachshund and Toy Dachshund.

German Spitz = Wolfsspitz (a.k.a. Keeshond), Grosspitz (Great Spitz), Mittelspitz (Medium/Standard Spitz), Kleinspitz (Miniature Spitz), Zwergspitz (Dwarf Spitz, a.k.a. Pomeranian).

Mexican Hairless Dog (Xoloitzcuintle) = Mexican Hairless Dog Standard, Mexican Hairless Dog Intermediate (Miniature) and Mexican Hairless Dog Miniature (Toy).

Münsterländer = Large Münsterländer (Grosser) and Small Münsterländer (Kleiner).

Peruvian Hairless Dog (Perro Sin Pelo del Perú) = Peruvian Hairless Dog Large (Grande), Peruvian Hairless Dog Medium (Medio) and Peruvian Hairless Dog Small (Pequeño).

Pinscher = Dobermann, German Pinscher, Miniature Pinscher, Affenpinscher and Austrian Pinscher (Österreichischer Pinscher).

Poodle = Standard Poodle, Medium Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle.

Portuguese Podengo = Portuguese Podengo Grande, Portuguese Podengo Medio and Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, possibly is also each size separated into if they're Smooth or Wire coated.

Schnauzer = Giant Schnauzer, Standard Schnauzer and Miniature Schnauzer.

Sennenhund (Swiss mountain dog) = Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund, Berner Sennenhund, Appenzeller Sennenhund and Entlebucher Sennenhund.

I couldn't decide if I should include the Bichon family or not, but it includes = Löwchen, Bichon Frisé, Coton de Tulear, Havanese (Bichon Havanais) and Maltese. (Though there is no large size difference, there is small size differences.)

:)

FL, had no idea there was such a thing as a toy dachsie! And I forgot that in Europe they recognise another size poodle (in US and UK there's only the three recognised). Learn something new every day, me! :)

I have some dog breed books, but in some cases I only remember that e.g. the Portuguese Podengo breed has more than one size and then, I checked up the different size's names.

But for example the Dachshunds I know, to translate their Swedish "size" names they're : Dachshund (normalsize), Dwarfdachshund and Rabbitdachshund. And when I went to school there was one in my class that had a cute and tiny Rabbitdachshund.
