School letters query!

Whilst at work we were having a ponder( I work with Pikachu and Lorian members on here!) and we wondered, where did the school letters (A,K,E,H,C,M,B,F) originate? Who decided we use letters and not numbers? Why do they go in that order?? Yes it's a busy day in the office.....
