School surface mystery?...A little weird

Yes, this will sound a little odd but here goes. When I was a child I rode at this riding school and I have no idea what the surface in the indoor school was. It was like black-ish sand with sort of red and blue bits through it...kind of lol. It seemed sort of dry but I may be mistaken. Very random I know but I have never seen it again since.

Anyone know what this was?
 
Could it have been electrical cable sheath that is made into sand like particles?
It is quite lightweight and can move a lot if it is deep.
 
Huh. Never thought of that infact I have never heard of that being done lol. That's a possibility, thanks!
 
I don't remember there being as much white bits and it seemed finer like sand BUT it was over a decade ago so yes that's probably it! Thanks! :)
