School use numbers?

OP you're all being a little inflexible. You can ride some mornings before work and do the stable chores in the evening. Could you go home for your dinner after work before going to the stables? The arena might be free later if you wanted sole use. If the others have put out obstacles before they're even ready to ride and you're about to enter the arena, just quickly dismantle their things and leave them in piles off the main track so you can easily work round them. They can put them back up when they're ready to use them ie after they've warmed up their horses, by which time you'll probably be cooling off your horse. If they don't like putting their things up twice then maybe they'll think about being more considerate of other people wanting to use the arena in the future. I don't agree with those who say no jumps/obstacles at peak times. If those activities are why you ride then why wouldn't you want to use your riding time that way? They don't keep their horses to ride at your convenience any more than you keep your horse to ride at their convenience. If everybody does their own thing within reason there are rarely issues so I can understand the YM saying to sort it out amongst yourselves. I'm not saying you should set out to cause trouble or be rude, but there's no need to tolerate other peoples nonsense either. People can't physically hog the arena if they aren't in there, so stop acting like they have and stand up for yourself a bit more. Do you like the yard apart from the arena use? If it's the last straw maybe leaving is the best option anyway.

To answer the title question, I'm happy to school in a 20x40 with a total of 4 in there. More than that and I find you can't get any serious work done.

At my old yard we had a reasonably sensible system.

Everyone was alllowed to book 2 slots of 30 minutes per week per horse for sole use at peak times.

If the school wasn't booked it was ok to share. I never saw more than about 3 people sharing a 20 x 40 school to be honest.

The main issue arose when people didn't ride as the school was booked and then the person didn't turn up to use their slot. However, they would soon get short shrift from the YO when that happened.

I do agree to some extent with some of this - I myself, dabble in Le Trec and Horse Agility so if the yard is quiet, I might set up some obstacles and then tack up to ride. If someone else is on the yard, I obviously won't put out a course obstacles - I might pop a pedestal or something in one corner (we have deep corners, so I can keep out of their way), but if someone turns up and I'm midway through - of course, they are welcome to join and school around me and my obstacles but I'm not sure why I should rush to put them away either.

I wouldn't expect someone who focused on jumping to put away poles or jumps, if I suddenly turned up and wanted to ride.

If your relatively new to the yard - you'll soon find the quiet times to ride. At my yard, it seems to be after 6pm on a weekday & I'd say between 11-1/2pm on a weekend.

Can you ask them what kind of times they tend to ride and plan accordingly?

I wouldn't be rushing to leave, if all other aspects of the yard are good and suit you but I can appreciate at times it is frustrating!
