As I have no rideable horses of my own at the moment (too young or too old with arthritis) my friend has offered me his driving cob to keep me occupied because he’s very sensible and a good lad, he’s a little over weight so needs some exercise, because of lockdown all of the proms and weddings that were booked in for him and his pulling twin were set back so he’s had a bit of time off. I’ve been hacking him out just to get him used to a rider on his back but he doesn’t really respond much to my aids, obviously lol, well apart from slow down or stop. He’s 13, he’s great, willing to please etc I’m just wondering if it’s worth giving him some time in the school (which he is unfamiliar with) or whether I should just carry on what I am doing which is hacking him and when he responds to my voice I give the aid at the same time so hopefully he’ll eventually catch on, it’s all voice commands with him but I sometimes forget to say anything as I’m a quiet rider usually but he has no idea what my aids mean... any advice for helping him learn my aids would be great x

I had a similar one, and used hacking to teach her the aids. Just keep pairing them with the voice commands he is used to and in time he will get it. Mine will happily now ride and drive and use the appropriate aids for each.
I've never enjoyed working in the school, and my horses tend not to either so I'm biased in saying I wouldn't go down that route. Natives in particular seem to find it tedious.
