When schooling my 4yr old mare I am having issues with her leaning on one side of the bit. On the left rein I struggle to get her to have the correct bend and end up feeling like I am carrying her on my left arm. On the right rein she over bends and falls out through the shoulder, and i still feel like i am carrying her. I ride her forwards, encorage her to get her hocks underneath her and basically drop and retake contact for her to carry herself which has so far been successful.

About 6mths ago she had an accident which after physio I was told she had muscle wastage on the left side. Every day I make her stretch round to the left and right. The physio says i just need to continue the schooling work to make sure I am equally building up the muscles and it is a matter of time.

Obviously i also take into account she is only 4 and I don't to push her too much at this ppoint either! It is difficult finding the right balance for her!

Sorry for length - are there any other techniques people could advise to build up the muscle.

if your on a straight line, on a very loose rein how is she carrying her neck from the withers? if its to one side even a bit id be thinking she still has an issue.

other than that, id be working on right bend, shoulder in if she can do this to help her stretch all her left side muscles.
