Hi

I wonder if you guys can help with an idea of costs for schooling. A friend of mine has a horse that needs schooling - it's 6 years old and has only just been backed. She needs further work to be done to bring the horse on for the eventual purpose of getting to the stage where she's ready for prelim. unaff. dressage. But of course before that just to be ready for the owner to safely ride her in the outdoor school.

What sort of weekly cost do you think would be about right for this? If I've left some vital information out let me know and I can fill you in.

Many thanks.

I will be sending away my newly broken gelding for some schooling beginning of next year and the yard I am sending him to (dressage yard) charges £185 per week. I know some places to charge as little as £100 per week and up to £225 per week. As for the amount of time the horse needs to spend there, it is very difficult to say as it completely depends on the horse. I will probably only send mine for 2 weeks and have been told he will return walk, trot, canter comfortably in the school and safely hacking out.

Thanks for the info - one option is for someone to come round to the yard on which the horse is kept and school the horse there, as opposed to sending the horse away to schooling livery - do you think the costs for this will be similar to those detailed above or much cheaper (considering it's not schooling livery)?

Thanks again.

It depends on what she would be wanting really, schooling costs are (or should be tailored to every clients needs).
On our yard we have a meeting with the new client before hand to discuss issues, and aims and objectives, a time frame and if they have any goals to reach.
Every horse is different, some are dominant and some are subserviant. If your horse is very dominant obviously it will take longer than a horse that is instantly subserviant to the owner.
Our yard uses natural horsemanship techniques along with classical riding. Our bog standard "traning livery" is approx £150 a week to inc all bedding and hay, riding and a basic groom. However, we do offer flexible rates for those who want different things, so this could be more or less, as far as im aware as im not the yard owner haha.
Hope that helps :)

Our yard owner does this for some of her clients, except the cheapest option is they bring their horse to the yard 3/4 times a week to be ridden. This costs £20 a hour and how often it is depends on the owner. If the trainer has to go to the horses yard, they obviously have to charge petrol /travel fee on top of their training costs.
