Incorporate millions of transitions, serpentines, circles etc, then he'll be so busy thinking about what he's doing next he won't have time to faff around.

I would also do lots of in hand work with him - pony club style with bags tied to fence / tarpaulins / flappy things to help build up his confidence & trust in you.

Lungeing / long reining are also good.

The list is endless!! A good book to get hold of is Richard Maxwells improve your horse in 30 mins a day (not exact title but nearly - it's quite good!)

Thanks for that Scotsmare. I must admit I do tend to do a lot of in-hand playing with him. It worked very well with Gulliver when he was 4.

Currently I try and introduce him to something new everyday assessing his reactions to see if I have any issues that may come up later. He has Grazed in hand next to big bale sileage in the wind with the long flappy snake bits making a lot of noise. I shied more than he did as Gulliver would have sat on my lap. Drifter just gazed at it and got on with the Grass business.

Yesterday I took him out on the yard when they were moving hay with the mini tractor and got him to talk to it while it was stationary with the engine running I had to take him away quite quickly as he was too interested in the Wing mirror and wanted to see if it was one of those convenient pull off types.

I was gutted yesteday afternoon beacuse after their one day event I turned him out for a while, when I went to get him in I called him and he walked up the field to me. In 13 years Gulliver never ever ever came to the gate he always made me walk to him.

Funny old things horses!!
